An outline is a great way to organize your thoughts. It’s especially useful for longer assignments, since it allows you to clearly see the structure of your article and the source material that you will use to support it.
The easiest way to create an outline is to create a table with two rows and three cpumns. In the left-hand cpumn, write down your thesis statement, and in the right-hand cpumn write down each of your supporting points. Next, draw a line under the thesis statement and above each supporting point. Under each line, write down the evidence that you will use to support your claim in that paragraph. If you need to break up a long argument into sub-points, use the same outline format and indicate that they are sub-sections by using a lowercase Roman numeral (I, II, III, etc.. Alternatively, you can just use a subheading (Subheading 1, Subheading 2, etc..
Let’s use this outline as an example:
On November 1st, 2013, Zoho Books had its fourth birthday! We celebrated with cake and ice cream, and everyone got a souvenir mug! Happy birthday, Zoho Books!

Note that there are no spaces between the outline cpumn headers. This is because we’re only using these cpumns to organize our thoughts and plan out what we will write later. The final version of the article shouldn’t have any of these headers visible.
