    A pen and paper. If you’re working on a laptop or iPad, use those tops as well. Just don’t let the screen become your crutch.

    The first step to building a great outline is to zone in on what you want to write about. Start with the subject and key points. The first sentence should be the thesis statement, or main idea of the article. It should also provide a preview of what is to come in the article. From there you can expand on the main points. If you can’t think of an opening sentence, start writing anyway; you’ll figure it out later.

    Step 2. Write for five minutes without stopping:

    Write like crazy without stopping to edit or self-criticize (or else you will never finish!. The goal is to get all your ideas onto paper, even if they are half-baked. Don’t stop to question anything; just write every thought that comes to mind, in order of importance. Don’t worry about spelling or grammar at this point either. You can fix all of that later. You can also use your outline to guide your writing. Revisit each section to make sure each idea appeals to the reader. Keep writing until you hit five minutes. Then stop.

    Step 3. Edit for style and length:

    Now that you have a rough draft of your entire article, you can go back and edit your work for style and length. This includes revising sentences to create an easy reading experience for your audience. Make sure each sentence flows into the next one. Make sure each paragraph supports the topic, while also moving forward in some way. Be careful not to make any major changes while editing; what you wrote in the previous step was your best thinking, so don’t kill it! Once you’ve gone through your article once or twice, you should be ready to move on to the next step.
