Integration of YouTube and Wave

YouTube is a video hosting website which has been the most popular social networking site for years. Not only is it one of the most popular video sharing sites, but it is also the largest one in terms of visitors and video content. According to Alexa, YouTube.com ranks as the 50th most visited web site in the world and 5th most visited web site in the United States. In addition, its more than 2 billion views per day make it the world's largest source of online video [1]. The website was founded on February 15, 2005 by three former PayPal employees. Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim. The purpose of YouTube was to provide users with a platform to upload, share and view videos and thus to encourage people to create videos that can entertain or educate others. The reason they chose the name YouTube was they wanted it to sound like what you are doing when you are watching videos on YouTube. "Youtube" [2].

YouTube was initially funded by an original investment by Sequoia Capital, but they were acquired by Google in November 2006 for $1.65 billion. The acquisition did not affect the management or the product of YouTube, but Google did have an interest in YouTube's user-generated content, such as videos and blogs, for their search engine results [3]. Since the acquisition, YouTube has continued to develop its own product based on Google's technpogy and infrastructure [4]. On May 27, 2007, at the Google I/O conference in San Francisco, California, Google announced a new version of the site with a redesigned interface and additional features such as enhanced quality for high definition (HD. playback, faster loading times and auto-resume capability [5]. The redesign increased YouTube's speed and efficiency from the previous seven hours to less than one second per page load and improved the page loading speed up to 10 times faster. In addition, the site's new look enabled users to easily discover new content on the site as well as explore a variety of features including personalized viewing recommendations, playlists and related content across channels [6]. The launch of the new YouTube site also had other effects on the company, such as increasing its profits from advertising by 55% in 2008. The site has also allowed Google to expand into other markets and countries including Brazil and Japan while continuing to grow in other areas like the United Kingdom, France and Germany [7]. Overall, YouTube is a very successful business venture for both Google and its users.

Wave is a project led by Google aimed at creating a new communication platform for Web 2.0 applications. Wave will allow people to use all of their Google services from within a single application. Some examples of this include Gmail chat messages, photos from Picasa and Reader feeds from Google News. Waves can be made public so that anyone can read them or shared with specific individuals through email, Google Talk or any other communication application [8]. Although there are many features of Wave that make it interesting for businesses and consumers alike, many of these features are already available through existing platforms like Gmail or Twitter. Instead, it seems that Wave will be used most frequently by people who do not have access to these communication technpogies or resources. This will enable users to communicate with people around the world using nothing more than a basic computer [9].

Wave has been under development since April 2008. It was first introduced at Google's developer conference in May 2009 as an invitation-only beta version [10]. The first wave was released on August 30, 2009 [11]. Even though Wave has been successful thus far, there are still some issues with its functionality that need to be fixed before it will be fully usable. For example, there are currently no mobile applications for Wave which mean that it cannot be used on mobile devices. In addition, Google has not yet decided whether or not they will charge users for Wave's service. Many companies have tried this method with limited success [12]. Finally, many people seem confused about exactly how Wave works. Many people are unsure about how it will work or how to use it effectively [13]. Regardless of these issues, Wave is an exciting new technpogical advancement which has great potential to change the way we interact with each other in our everyday lives.

Integration of YouTube and Wave

YouTube has been one of the most popular websites for sharing video content ever since its creation in 2005. It provides users with a platform to not only upload their own videos but also view those uploaded by millions of others around the world. One of YouTube's newest features is its integration with Google Wave. Users may now add videos to their Google Wave conversations just by linking them from a YouTube video directly into their conversation thread [14]. This feature has been available since June 25th 2010. According to David Lawee, YouTube's vice president of corporate development & partnerships, "this integration will open up entirely new possibilities for interaction between people" [15]. Not only does this feature make adding videos into your conversations easier but it also makes it much more convenient because you do not have to leave your conversation to find videos related to your topic of interest.

Benefits of Integration of YouTube and Wave

The integration between YouTube and Wave allows users to take advantage of two very effective tops in communication and social media. Both YouTube and Wave have their own unique benefits; however when they are integrated together these benefits can greatly enhance each other making them even more powerful. For example, unlike Wave which is only text based without audio or video functions, YouTube allows you to easily listen to videos or watch them right from your computer screen. In addition, Wave allows you to easily share information with individuals or groups through email or online instant messaging systems such as Google Talk or Skype. With the integration between YouTube and Wave you can now share your favorite videos with friends or coworkers who are using Wave through your conversation thread due to the ability to link your conversations directly from YouTube videos [16]. These benefits help integrate these two tops together so that they are more beneficial than if they were standing alone without each other.

In conclusion, I believe that integrating YouTube into Wave will be an important feature because it will allow people to easily share different types of content such as video content from YouTube with others using Wave in real time without having to leave your conversation thread. As a result individuals will be able to connect with others around the world more easily using two different technpogies that have already proven their success in today's society; therefore businesses will benefit from this feature as well because they will be able to utilize it in order to reach more customers across different parts of the world through this top as well as other social media tops within Wave.
