Benefits of Integration of YouTube and Gmail

Thesis Statement. The integration of YouTube and Gmail has brought about a valuable service by allowing users access to videos without leaving their inbox.

  • Introduction:
  • YouTube?

  • History of YouTube
  • YouTube was founded in 2005 by three former Paypal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim. Before the site was purchased by Google in 2006 for $1.65 billion, Hurley had intended to create a video dating site. However, the founders decided to create a video sharing site because they felt that it would be more successful than a dating site. Google purchased YouTube to give them an edge on the video-sharing market as well as to compete with other companies such as Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL who were all trying to develop their own video-sharing sites. In 2007, YouTube became the largest online video directory in the world. In 2008, YouTube reached 100 million unique users per month and hosted over 3 billion videos. Today, YouTube is owned and operated by Google and boasts over 800 million unique users per month. (Wikipedia, 2013)

  • User Interface
  • The user interface for YouTube is fairly simple, yet it offers many features to enhance the user's experience (see figure 1. At the top of the page there are links to several categories such as Music, Entertainment, Comedy, News and Ppitics, Gaming, Education, and more. Each category contains subcategories which allow users to further narrow their search. While viewing a video or channel users can easily find related material by using the "Recommended" feature located on the right hand side of the screen. The "Featured" section displays new and popular videos. The "Top Rated" section displays videos that have received the highest rating from other viewers. The "Top Favorites" section displays videos that have received the most "Favorite" ratings from other viewers. The "Comments" section displays comments from other viewers about the video you are viewing. Under each category there is a section called "Uploaded By". This section allows you to see what videos have been uploaded by a specific person or organization. On the left hand side of your screen there is a box containing a list of people you are subscribed to. You can also add new people to your subscription box by searching for them in one of the many categories or adding them manually from their profile page.

  • YouTube App
  • YouTube also has its own app for smart phones and tablets (see figure 2. This app allows users to view all of the content found on the YouTube website plus additional content not available on the website including live feeds from certain cameras, mobile-specific playlists, and more. The app also allows you to watch videos offline so you do not need an internet connection in order to view them.

  • YouTube Subscriptions
  • On YouTube, users can subscribe to other users' channels or playlists in order to receive updates when new videos are posted or when changes are made to existing videos. They can also "like" videos or leave comments for others to read. These subscriptions and comments are linked through Google+ so it gives users another avenue to connect with others; however, they are not necessarily required to use Google+. Users can also connect with each other through Google+ Hangouts in which they can share their screens with others while they talk about whatever is on their mind at that moment in time. Integration of YouTube and Gmail

YouTube recently integrated with Gmail so users can now watch videos directly from their inbox without having to leave the email application (see figures 3-21. If a user receives an email containing a link to a YouTube video, they can click on the link and watch it directly within their inbox without having to open a new tab or window. After watching the video they can then reply back to the sender just as if they had responded to an email attachment. Instead of replying back with text they can reply back with a comment about the video they just watched or a reaction GIF (emoticon.
