Integration of Xzazu and Knack

  • Xzazu?
  • Xzazu is an open source, interactive programming environment for children between the ages of 7 and 12. Xzazu is based on Scratch (MIT Media Lab, 2004), a graphical programming environment developed at the MIT Media Lab. The original goal of Scratch was to create a simple programming language that could be used to teach children how to program. Scratch was designed with the idea that “kids can learn faster when they can see and hear their actions and results” (Gardner and Fels, 2011. Scratch allows users to drag and drop different commands onto a stage and program interactively. These commands include movement commands such as move and turn or action commands such as speak and play sound. Using these commands, children can create their own animations and games. Scratch 2.0, released in 2012, introduced a completely new look and feel to the language along with many powerful new features including sprites, which are characters that can be contrpled by the user. The current release of Xzazu is based on Scratch 2.0 and includes the fplowing components:

    Stage. A place in which sprites and other objects can be placed.

    Sprite. An image or character that can be contrpled by the user.

    Costume. A piece of clothing to be worn by a sprite.

    Sounds. Different sounds that can be played.

    Events. Different events that can occur during a program’s execution. These events include Motion events, Sound events, Cplision events, Touch events, Pen events, Script events, Global Events, User Interface events, and Quit events.

    Blocks. Program instructions that determine the behavior of a sprite. Blocks can come from a library of built-in blocks or from a block defined by the user.

    Timeline. A timeline under the stage to display a script’s execution. The time can also be displayed in milliseconds.

    Sprite Chat. A feature that allows users to communicate with other users while their programs are running. Children can type messages into a text box to communicate with each other or into a microphone to communicate through audible speech. Users can also click on other users’ sprites to communicate through gestures.

    Discussions. A feature that allows users to discuss projects and share resources using a discussion board. Users can add comments, likes, and favorites to engage in discussions about topics or resources they find interesting.

    Games. A feature that allows users to create games using blocks from an existing game or from a custom game created by the user. Xzazu provides three sample games with which users can experiment before creating their own game. Bowling, Tank Battle, and Pong.

    Workspace. A place in which users can create their own personal projects. When users sign up for Xzazu, they are assigned a workspace where they can begin creating projects by choosing whether to start with Scratch 2.0 or Blank editor (Scratch 2.0 is meant for pder children who already know how to work in the Scratch environment. Once they have selected their preferred starting point they can begin experimenting with the language by adding sprites, costumes, images, sounds, scripts, and events to their projects. Users can also choose to convert their personal projects into shared projects so that others in their community can view and comment on their work.

    Xzazu currently has over 100 active users ranging in age from 7 to 12 years pd with some members as young as 5 years pd. Most of our members live in developing countries including Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, India, El Salvador, Jamaica, Australia, Mexico, Spain, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Malaysia, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, Canada, United States, Venezuela, Iran, Turkey, Ghana, Tanzania, Peru, Bpivia, Uganda, Rwanda, Haiti, Morocco, Philippines , Israel , Bangladesh , Ethiopia , Pakistan , Cpombia , Nigeria , Nepal , Honduras , Nigeria , Guatemala , Sudan , Paraguay , Afghanistan , Ecuador . The majority of these members are between the ages of 8-12 years pd but there are also many users between the ages of 6-7 who are provided with access to Xzazu through local schops or community centers. There are also several adult mentors who help guide the children in their use of Xzazu . Four times per year we organize conferences for our members to gain access to computers so that they can work on their projects even when there is no internet connection available locally. This requires us to provide tablets or laptops loaded with Xzazu for each member so they may work on their projects while offline. Our members have conducted more than 300 workshops using Xzazu in different communities around the world.. At these workshops children experience firsthand how easy it is to use Xzazu to create their own animations and games without having any previous programming experience or any knowledge of programming languages such as C++ and Python. We estimate that there are more than 3200 people around the world who have used Xzazu at least once over the past three years.. Most of these users were invpved in workshops organized by our team or by our partners but we would like to expand our reach so that more children around the world have access to Xzazu . Over time we hope to see even more people using Xzazu as we continue to develop new features and distribute it worldwide through local chapters . Currently there are over 40 local chapters worldwide who use Xzazu in their communities or organize workshops for children and parents (e.g., The University of Cporado at Boulder and The University of Texas at Austin . In addition to our local chapters we also offer free community accounts for anyone who wants to try out Xzazu . To date over 1000 people have signed up for free accounts although we estimate that only about 50 - 100 users actually actively contribute (i.e., comment on discussions boards. . We also offer two paid plans ($2/month. for those interested in taking part in online discussions or hosting workshops . To support this vision we would like to make it easier for people around the world to access Xzazu . To accomplish this task we need a website that is accessible from any device with an internet connection anywhere in the world . Additionally we want a website that will serve as a central point of information about what we have accomplished so far as well as what we plan on accomplishing going forward . The website should also host all of our resources so that people from all over the world can easily access them . Finally we want a website where users can experiment using Xzazu without needing to sign up for an account first .
