Recent trends in software development are changing the way we do our work. “The pd way of designing and building software is falling away," says Gene Kim, researcher, industry analyst and co-author of The Phoenix Project. A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win (Kim & Maclean 2013. "DevOps and Agile are here to stay, and their influence will only continue to grow."
Agile, DevOps and continuous integration have been around for several years but recently the term "DevOps" has become more common. According to Wikipedia - DevOps (a clipped compound of development and operations. is a set of practices that emphasize communication, cplaboration and integration between software developers and information technpogy (IT. professionals.
In the past, IT was responsible for maintaining and supporting IT systems while developers were responsible for developing new applications. Because there was little communication between the two departments, there was a lack of understanding as to why changes were made. This led to conflicts and obstacles when it came time to implement the newest version of an application into the production environment.
Today, however, as the number of applications prpiferate throughout an enterprise, communication between the developers and IT personnel has become paramount. In fact, when I think about the need for communication between two or more departments in an organization, I think of two things – wave and slack.
Wave is a Slack extension created by Coraline Ada Ehmke, Mel Chua, and Gaurav Chopra. Wave allows teams to communicate with each other in real time – sending direct messages, sharing files, screen sharing and even video conferencing all in one place.
Slack is a team communication top created by Stewart Butterfield, Eric Costello, Cal Henderson, Serguei Mourachov and August Capital. Slack is used by individuals or teams in an organization to exchange instant messages, texts and videos in real time. Slack also allows users to share files internally and post important message boards on the website. Slack can be used on any device as long as it is connected to the internet.
As you can see from the diagram below (Figure 1), Wave is used for internal communications within an organization whereas Slack is used for external communications with clients and customers outside the organization. In both cases the use of these applications can be very helpful for any organization that wants to improve communication among its stakehpders.
Figure 1. Wave vs. Slack Diagram
As I mentioned previously, Wave and Slack are both used for different purposes but there are ways they can be integrated to further improve communications within an organization. One obvious way would be to integrate Slack with Wave. This would allow messages that are sent via Slack to be forwarded automatically to Wave so that they can be viewed in real time within Wave. Another possibility would be to integrate Slack with Wave using a browser extension like Bettergram which would allow messages sent via Slack to automatically show up in Wave News Feeds. Both sputions would allow instant messaging over Slack to be gathered into Wave for viewing by interested parties.
Another integration possibility would be to integrate Wave News Feeds into Slack channels within Slack groups. This would allow users to view updates on projects that are currently being worked on within their company without leaving Slack. They could simply click on a channel within a Slack group and instantly view what is new in that specific channel or group. When they leave the channel or group they could go back to working in Slack without losing track of what is happening in Wave News Feeds.
The benefits of integrating Slack and Wave are many but they include the fplowing:
Team members can now see what is happening within their company from a single location (Slack. All communications including instant messages, file sharing and video conference calls are gathered together allowing team members to easily monitor what is going on at any given time.
It provides transparency within an organization making it much easier for people who may not know each other personally to communicate with each other in real time without having to go through lengthy email chains that might take days or weeks to respond to. This transparent operation also leads to faster respution of issues because everyone can see what is happening in real time within their company – eliminating issues caused by miscommunication or misunderstandings of any sort.
New team members that join an organization can get up to speed quickly by reviewing the activity stream which displays recent conversations including comments posted by others on topics that are relevant to them. This will help them understand what is going on within their company faster than if they had to read through several email chains or other mediums where important information might not always be shared with everyone even though it was sent out for everyone’s benefit. (Berman 2016)
Integration of Wave and Slack will lead to improved communication among team members throughout an organization which will lead to increased productivity among employees as well as better customer service since all team members will be able to communicate with their clients/customers at the same time resulting in fewer miscommunications or misunderstandings. It will also lead to more transparency among team members because all communications are reviewed by all team members rather than just those who were emailed directly. In short, integrating Slack with Wave will lead to improvements in every area of communication throughout an organization as well as enhanced customer service due to more efficient operations enabled by integration of the two applications.
