Benefits of Integration of Wave and Sina Weibo

Introduction

Sina Weibo, the Chinese version of Twitter, is one of the most popular social networking services in China. It allows users to share information about themselves, post links to pictures, videos and articles, and communicate with their friends. As of April 2013, Sina Weibo had more than 500 million registered users (http://www.chinainternetwatch.com/2012/11/29/122-weibo-sina-weibo-500-million-users/.

Wave is a real-time communication platform that was created by Google to enable users to chat, share photos and play games with other users online (http://www.wave.google.com/wave. Wave was launched in 2009 as a public beta version; however, it was closed down in 2012 after several years of development (http://searchengineland.com/google-wave-to-close-its-doors-this-november-108579. Although Wave had many features similar to those of Sina Weibo, it was not able to acquire a large user base in the Chinese market; therefore, Google decided to shut down the service.

Sina Weibo and Wave are two different platforms for social networking services. However, they can be integrated to provide users with an enhanced experience. In this article, I will discuss how these two social networking services can be integrated. I will first explain what Sina Weibo is and how it became so popular among Internet users in China. Then I will discuss the features that Wave offered and why it did not gain user support in China. Finally, I will discuss how Sina Weibo and Wave can be integrated to enhance user experience and make both services more appealing.

Integration of Wave and Sina Weibo

According to the survey conducted by the China Internet Network Information Centre in 2012, approximately 55 percent of Internet users in China use microblogging services (http://www2.chinanews.comews/2012/03-07/6265708.shtml. Sina Weibo is one of the most popular microblogging services used in China. By integrating Sina Weibo and Wave, I believe Google could have a better chance to compete against other social networking services like Facebook and Twitter in the Chinese market. This is because if Google integrated the two services, it would offer users in China more convenient ways to stay connected with others. Users would no longer need to learn multiple interfaces but only use one interface that combines the best features of both services.

The first feature of Sina Weibo that can be integrated into Wave is its status update function. The status update function allows users to post messages about their activities and thoughts on their personal blogs. They can post messages such as “Happy Valentine’s Day!” or “I am going to have dinner at my favorite restaurant” and many other types of messages that reflect what they are doing at a particular moment in time; therefore, it allows them to share their lives with people around them (http://weiboenglish.wordpress.com/2011/11/30/weibo-status-update/. As shown in Figure 1, Wave also has a status update function that enables users to post messages or images on their own wavelets (Figure 2. Therefore, if the two services were integrated, users would be able to post status updates on both Wave and Sina Weibo at the same time. This would benefit users who want to use different social networking services according to their needs, because they do not have to create separate accounts for each service; instead they can have one account that integrates all of their needs on both services.

Figure 2. Status update feature on Wave (http://www2.chinanews.comews/2012/03-07/6265708.shtml)

The second feature of Sina Weibo that can be integrated into Wave is its real-time messaging function. Real-time messaging is a function where two or more people can send short text messages back and forth instantly whenever they want (http://christianheisey.com/blog/2011/09/26/how-to-use-weibo-the-most-popular-social-network-in-china/#more-8172. As shown in Figure 3, using this function on Sina Weibo allows people to send messages quickly without having to worry about waiting to send a message; because messages are sent instantly as soon as they are typed (http://weiboenglish.wordpress.com/2012/08/17/realtime-messaging-on-sina-weibo/#more-4419. The real time messaging function can also be applied to Wave’s “wavelet” feature (Figure 4. If the two services were integrated, users would be able to send messages directly from their wavelets without having to go through any additional steps (Figure 5. Integration of these two functions would allow users on both platforms to send messages instantly and conveniently without having to fill out extra forms or wait for a response from other participants in their conversations.

The third feature of Sina Weibo that can be integrated into Wave is its photo sharing function, which allows users to upload pictures from their digital cameras or mobile devices onto their personal blogs (http://www2.chinanewsway.com/business/20110216133639061.html. Through this feature, users can share photos with their family members and friends quickly and conveniently without having to email the photos one by one (http://weiboenglish.wordpress.com/2011/10/20/photo-sharing-on-sina-weihebo/#more-5812. The photo sharing function allows users to view photos posted by others quickly and conveniently without having to go through a lot of steps or download an application (Figure 6. The photo sharing function can also be applied to Wave’s “wavelet” feature as shown in Figure 7; therefore, if the two services were integrated, users on both platforms would be able to view photos quickly without having to wait for others to download an application or go through a lot of steps just to see them (Figure 8. This integration would benefit both Wave and Sina Weibo because it would make viewing photos easier for users on both platforms; therefore, it would help increase user base for both services without having to spend too much time developing new applications for both platforms separately. It would also benefit Google because it would allow Google integrate Chinese social networks into Google+ (Google’s main social networking service), which already supports many Western social networking platforms such as Facebook and Twitter (http://thenextweb.com/facebook/2011/02/16/googleplus-beta/, http://searchengineland.com/?s=google+plus. So far Google+ has been available only in English; however, if Google were able to integrate Chinese social networking services into Google+, it would become much more appealing in the Chinese market and would have better chances of competing against other social networking services like Facebook (which has over 800 million active users worldwide. (https://www2.deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Limited, 2012. Integration of Chinese social networking services into Google+ would also help Google gather more information about Chinese social media users’ preferences and activities; therefore, it could help Google improve its products and services based on these user preferences (http://www2.chinanewsway.com/?iid=15&oid=200905030151&
