Integration of Vtiger and Google Contacts

Vtiger?

Google Contacts?

Google Contacts is a free application to store and share contact information. The application is available for Android, iOS, Chrome OS, Gmail and other products by Google. It allows users to create entries and add multiple phone numbers, mailing addresses, email addresses, nicknames, photos etc. to each entry.

Vtiger CRM is a customer relationship management software that provides web based applications for small and medium scale enterprises. The application helps in managing sales leads, marketing campaigns, appointments, proposals, opportunities etc for the business.

Integration of Vtiger and Google Contacts

Integration of Vtiger and Google Contacts helps the users in accessing contacts information from Google Contacts in Vtiger CRM. It also helps the users to access Vtiger CRM data from within their Gmail account. The users can send emails directly from Gmail without opening Vtiger CRM interface. Integrating Vtiger with Google Contacts also allows the users to synchronize their Google Contacts with other third party services like Facebook and LinkedIn. There are multiple ways to integrate the two applications. Let’s explore some of them.

The user can install a plugin on Vtiger CRM side to integrate it with Google Contacts. This plugin has to be installed on the server where the application is hosted. After installing the plugin, the user has to enter a token into the Vtiger CRM interface and enter the name of the Google Contact group that will be created when the integration process is complete. When completed, the user can see new contacts groups displayed under ‘Contacts’ tab in the navigation menu.

Another way of integrating Vtiger CRM with Google Contacts is by using API provided by Google. The user can visit https://developers.google.com/contact-sync/v1/docs/overview for more information related to the API call and installation.

In order to integrate Vtiger with Google Contacts via API call, the user needs to have a valid OAuth 2 client ID from Google. Open the Google API Conspe at https://conspe.developers.google.com/ and sign in with your credentials. Create a project if you do not already have an active project. Click on ‘Create Project’ button on top right corner of the screen or click ‘Select a project’ and select any one of your existing projects from the list and click ‘OK’. Now you will be navigated to a project dashboard box which displays all active projects along with its details. Click on ‘Enable APIs & Services’ option located on the left hand side of the page and then click on ‘Google APIs’ option located on the right hand side of the page under ‘Services’ section. Here you will be presented with a list of options; select ‘Contact Sync API’ option from this list and then click on ‘Enable’ button next to it. Once you click on Enable button, you will be redirected to a page displaying all project permissions associated with your OAuth 2 client ID. To view details, click on ‘Client ID’ option located next to your OAuth 2 client ID in the top right corner of this page and then click on ‘View Details’ link located next to ‘Contact Sync API’ option in the drop down list appearing below your OAuth 2 client ID in this page. This will open an edit window where you will need to fill out your project name, product name and description of service you are providing so as to generate a valid OAuth 2 client ID key for your application. Once filled in, click on ‘Save’ button located at bottom right corner of this edit window and now you will be navigated back to your project dashboard box which displays all active projects along with their details again. Next step is to add new application in your project dashboard box by clicking on ‘Add another app’ button located at bottom left corner of this page and then selecting “Other Application Type” option from the list displayed after clicking on ‘Add another app’ button and then click on ‘Create’ button located at bottom right corner of this page. Now you will be navigated back to your project dashboard box which displays all active projects along with their details again and you will be presented with a form asking for various details about your app like App name, App description, Website URL etc. Fill these fields in accurately and then click on ‘Save’ button located at bottom right corner of this form. Once saved, you will be presented with an edit window where you will need to fill out all permissions associated with your application so as to generate a valid OAuth 2 client ID key for your application. Select all permissions you want for your application and then click on ‘Save’ button located at bottom right corner of this edit window and now you will be navigated back to your project dashboard box which displays all active projects along with their details again. Next step is to copy both Client ID key and Client secret key generated for your application by Google in this edit window and then paste them into a text file or somewhere else where they are accessible easily by you later on. Now go back to https://developers.google.com/contact-sync/v1/docs/overview link given above and copy the AUTH_URI parameter value given there by clicking anywhere inside that value field and pressing Ctrl+C keys simultaneously or right clicking anywhere inside that value field and selecting Copy option from context menu appearing after right clicking on it and then going to Vtiger CRM interface and clicking anywhere inside edit mode window where you want this parameter value to be pasted by pressing Ctrl+V keys simultaneously or right clicking anywhere inside that edit mode window and selecting Paste option from context menu appearing after right clicking on it. Now open up a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit where you copied that AUTH_URI parameter value earlier and paste it between single quotes after replacing {AUTH_URI} part of it with {your_project_name} part of it so it should look something like this – “https://accounts.google.com/o/oauth2/auth?client_id={your_project_name}&redirect_uri={your_project_name}&scope=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcontacts&response_type=code&access_type=offline” . If there are any spaces present between single quotes, remove them by pressing Shift + Space keys simultaneously or right clicking anywhere inside those single quotes and selecting Remove Space option from context menu appearing after right clicking on it before pasting it between single quotes as shown above otherwise it won’t work properly when entered between single quotes in edit mode window in Vtiger CRM interface later on in our case because we will be entering it through Vtiger CRM interface instead of doing it manually as explained earlier in case of copying it manually by opening a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit where it was copied earlier and pasting it between single quotes after replacing {AUTH_URI} part of it with {your_project_name} part of it as explained earlier so it should look something like this – “https://{your_project_name}.appspot.com/_ah/api/auth/device/openidconnect?redirect_uri=https%3A%2F%2F{your_project_name}.appspot.com/_ah/api/auth/device%23&response_type=code&scope=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.googleapis.com%2Fauth%2Fcontacts&access_type=offline” . Replace {your_project_name} part of AUTH_URI parameter value with the name of project you set while generating OAuth 2 client ID key for your application earlier in step 3a if it is different from what you have in your text editor now by pressing Shift + Space keys simultaneously or right clicking anywhere inside that AUTH_URI parameter value field in your text editor and selecting Replace option from context menu appearing after right clicking on it before pasting it between single quotes as shown above otherwise replace {your_project_name} part only if it is different from what you have in your text editor now or leave that field empty if everything is same as what you have in your text editor now otherwise replace {your_project_name}
