Trello is a web-based project management application for tracking projects and tasks. Users are able to create boards to organize their projects. Boards have lists that can be used to organize tasks, and each list item can represent a task. Tasks can be assigned to users or added by the user themselves. Trello users can add checklists, due dates, attachments, labels, and notes to each item.

Trello uses PostgreSQL as its back-end database. The data made available by Trello is stored in a highly normalized schema in order to provide fast access for multiple types of queries from multiple clients. RESTful version of the API supports GET and POST methods for creating new resources, PUT for updating resources, DELETE for deleting resources, HEAD for obtaining information about resources without modifying them, OPTIONS for getting information about the supported HTTP methods, and TRACE for debugging purposes. RESTful JSON format is used for both GET and PUT requests, with the content-type header set to application/json. SOAP version of the API also supports the same methods as RESTful version of the API along with new methods such as BIND_RESOURCE, DELETE_RESOURCE, GET_RESOURCE, GET_CONTEXT, and MODIFY_RESOURCE. SOAP format is used with both GET and PUT requests with the content-type header set to text/xml.
