Integration of Square and MySQL

  • Square is a mobile payment processing company, which is basically a platform that enables merchants to accept payments using smartphones or tablets. They also offer their own credit card reader that plugs into your smartphone or tablet.
  • MySQL is an open-source database management system that is designed for speed and economy of scale. It is also available for free under the GNU GPL license. The name comes from the company that originally developed it, MySQL AB, which was later acquired by Sun Microsystems, who was then acquired by Oracle Corporation.[1]
  • Integration of Square and MySQL benefits both company and their customers. This integration helps Square to reach new customers. On other hand, it makes the product and experience of these two company much more convenient for their paying customers.
  • Square launched their credit card reader in 2013 for $9.99. The main aim behind launching this device was to make it as simple as possible to accept payments using a smartphone or tablet. To accept credit cards through Square, you need to pay a 2.75% per swipe transaction fee.[2]

This device enables you to accept payment from any person who owns a credit card. You can also sell products online and accept payments through this device. Customers can also use their phones to get real-time updates on processing payments. This integration also gives a lot of flexibility to the businesses, who now have the freedom to choose the type of device they will use for accepting payments.[3]

  • Square offers two different devices for accepting payments; one is “Square Stand” and other is “Square Reader”. Square offers a free introductory kit with Stand and Reader. However, after that, the price for Stand is $299 and the price for Reader is $49. If you want to get more than one Reader, you have to buy them at a discounted price of $37.50 each.[4]
  • PayPal has announced that they will integrate with Square’s mobile payment system.[5] This integration will allow PayPal users to pay using their PayPal accounts in stores that are equipped with Square’s point of sale system.[6] This means that customers will be able to use their PayPal accounts for purchases in stores that are equipped with the Square terminal.[7] As of now, Square offers its products only in US and Canada. However, it is expected that Square will expand its services across the world as time goes by.[8]
