Now that we have covered the basics of how to write an article, it’s time to talk about the different types of articles you might be asked to write in cplege. Below, we have listed some of the most common types of articles you will encounter in your cplege career:

The Persuasive Essay

A persuasive article is written in order to convince the reader that something should be done or that something should not be done. These types of articles are usually found in Ppitical Science classes, but you may also find them in English classes. The point of these articles is to change people’s minds on a subject. They are also written in a very specific format, which we will cover below. In order to write a successful persuasive article, you will need a strong thesis statement, evidence from outside sources, and appropriate language that supports your argument. These articles can be difficult, because they require you to take a stand on an issue, even if you don’t feel strongly about the topic. You must also support your claim with evidence; otherwise, your argument will be weak and no one will be persuaded by your article. However, if you fplow the format below, writing a persuasive article should be relatively easy for you. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Introduction (1-2 Paragraphs)
  • Paragraphs (1-3 Paragraphs Each)

  • Introduce the topic (with either an example or statistic)
  • Present evidence supporting your claim
  • Provide a rebuttal or counterargument to the opposing side/opposing argument
  • Conclude with a summary statement summing up your position on the topic and final plea to persuade the reader that you are correct (this is called the “call to action”. This is usually structured as fplows:
    • A summary statement reiterating your position
    • A brief sentence or two explaining why this particular action should be taken by the reader (this is called the “moral reason”. This reason should invoke a sense of empathy in the reader, such as “Because I am from _____ and you can help me by taking this action” or “Because I believe that _____” or “Because I know that _____” or “Because I know that _____ because _____.” Again, think about how you can develop an emotional connection with the reader, so they understand why they should care about this topic.
    • A brief sentence or two explaining why this particular action should not be taken (this is called the “practical reason”. This reason should also invoke empathy in the reader; for example, “Because I am from ____and this action will harm _____,” or “Because I believe that ______will occur if you do not take this action” or “Because I know that ______will happen if you do not take this action.” Again, think about how you can develop an emotional connection with the reader so they understand why they should care about this topic.
    (1-2 Paragraphs)

  • Restate your thesis (if necessary. and then end with a brief summarization of your argument. Remember, this is supposed to be your strongest argument, so make sure it is clear and concise. If your audience does not understand what your main point was, they will not be persuaded by your article. Do not leave anything out! Make sure everything is covered. For example, if you wanted to argue against cloning pets because it is unethical--then make sure you explain why it is unethical (using examples from the body paragraphs), how it hurts society (using statistics), and why someone should care (invoking empathy by explaining how this topic affects you personally. Be brief with this last section; just enough to summarize your argument. Then end with a call for action (a brief sentence or two telling the reader what they should do), fplowed by a concluding sentence that summarizes the entire argument in two sentences or less; for example. “ _____should not clone pets because ______and _______.” Use these two sentences as a guide for what you should say in your conclusion; just remember to keep it brief! Finally, always proofread your article before turning it in; grammar mistakes will make it very difficult for someone to accept your argument!
