Integration of Slack and MongoDB Realm

Slack?

According to Wikipedia, Slack is an application created by the team behind the image hosting service Imgur and launched in February 2014. It was developed as a top for business communication, with features like direct messages and group chat. As of June 2015, Slack had 2 million daily active users with 800,000 teams using the system at that time. Since its launch, Slack has added a number of features, including threaded messaging, desktop app versions, and video-conferencing. As of December 2016, Slack has 4 million daily active users.

MongoDB Realm?

MongoDB is a document database that uses JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas (MongoDB calls the format BSON), making the integration of data in certain types of applications easier and faster. In terms of structure and storage, MongoDB’s document-oriented approach is similar to RDF triples, or relational tables connected by key fields. The documents in MongoDB provide dynamic typing and optional typing allows the schema to be extended without having to update code – making it flexible and fast for unstructured data storage in applications. MongoDB supports replication and load balancing, giving high availability with no single point of failure.

Integration of Slack and MongoDB Realm

MongoDB’s document model facilitates storage and retrieval of JSON documents with dynamic schemas. For example, a cplection can store one document per user profile. Each user document contains attributes such as name, age, gender, marital status and posts array of message objects. An attribute called posts links a message object to a user document. For example, a message object looks like this:

{ "message_id". 123456788098765, "text". "I love MongoDB!", "user_id". 456789012345678 }

Slack’s API lets users create slash commands, which are triggered by typing a command fplowed by a slash plus relevant metadata after an open slash / . Slash commands can take arguments that are passed along to the application as JSON-formatted payloads. These slash commands can allow the user to perform the same functionality across all their devices, opening the door to use Slack from mobile devices while on the go.

With Slack’s API you can create new slash commands in your apps for sending messages to channels and private groups when used with OAuth 2.0 authentication. The authorization flow supports both interactive and non-interactive flows. To trigger a slash command in an app, users type a command (for example /help . to Slack after opening a slash ( / . Slack then returns a response payload that can be used to trigger an action within your app. You can also use inline buttons to trigger custom slash commands. These buttons can be placed anywhere in your web UI without requiring any additional configuration or setup. Users don’t have to leave your site to access Slack’s features through commands. This feature empowers you to engage more deeply with your users by letting them communicate directly with your app from Slack. An example command could be. /ping <user> . When a user types /ping <user> , it sends a request to your app with an HTTP POST containing the argument <user> . Your app should respond with an HTTP 200 OK status code and a payload that contains the message. If posting asynchronously, your app should return HTTP 202 Accepted instead. The payload format is:

{ "ok". true|false, "channel". "#general"|"#<channel_name>"|"#<channel_id>"|"#c2dm_bulk", "ts". <epoch_timestamp>, "text". "<message>", "type". "bot_message"|"mention" }

To get started with building custom integrations with Slack, check out the docs here. https://api.slack.com/custom-integrations/overview. You can also add inline buttons for triggering custom Slash Commands in your web UI to quickly engage your users. https://api.slack.com/docs/inline-commands/getting-started.

Using these integrations, developers can build powerful applications that tap into slack’s rich set of features to enhance their users’ experience.
