Slack is a team communication app that allows teams to cplaborate and communicate effectively. According to Slack’s website, “Slack makes it easier for your team to be your best self.” Slack was founded by Stewart Butterfield, Eric Costello, Cal Henderson, and Serguei Mourachov in February of 2013.
The company started out as Tiny Speck, an online game company that produces Glitch, an online game (similar to Farmville. where users can create their own miniature worlds. During the development of Glitch, the developers noticed that the application they were using for internal communications had many problems. The developers at Tiny Speck turned to IRC, a system that was not particularly useful for an online game team. Furthermore, IRC channels are notoriously hard to search effectively. Thus, the development of Slack began in February 2013.
Since its founding in 2013, Slack has been growing rapidly, acquiring 1.25 million active users in the last two years alone. In July 2015, Slack announced the acquisition of Screenhero, a video cplaboration service. In September 2015, Slack announced its entry into the Enterprise market with its revamped version of enterprise software called Enterprise Grid. In January 2016, Slack announced the launch of its new mobile app for Android and iOS. In May 2016, Slack announced its $160 million round of funding from Thrive Capital and the Japanese firm SoftBank Corp.
Etsy is an e-commerce website that allows sellers to list their products for sale. According to Etsy’s website, “A marketplace where you can buy and sell all things handmade, vintage, and supplies for crafting.” Etsy was founded by Rob Kalin, Chris Maguire, Haim Schoppik, and Jared Tarbell in June 2005.
The idea of Etsy came from Rob’s frustration with the difficulties of selling his work on Ebay. While he liked the idea of Ebay, he wanted something different – a site that allowed individuals without storefronts to sell their work as well as have contrp over their own prices. He teamed up with Chris Maguire and together they brainstormed a new type of online marketplace for handmade goods. They also sought out Haim Shoppik and Jared Tarbell who were actively working on an online marketplace for vintage items. While these four men worked on the project individually, they shared common ideas about what they wanted the site to be like. They decided to combine their efforts and talents into one site in order to execute their mutual vision more efficiently. In July 2005, they incorporated Etsy as a business and began working on the new site. On May 20th 2006, Etsy went live and became an instant hit. Since then, Etsy has grown into an international marketplace with over 50 million members and over 35 million listings. In November 2013, Etsy went public on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE. ETSY. In 2014, Etsy earned $195 million in revenue through 3.7 million active sellers and 20 million active buyers worldwide. http://about.etsy.com/en/press/press-releases/etsy-earns-201-million-revenue-2014
