This article will primarily focus on the concept of Slack and Delay By Connect. The other concepts are not to be neglected but they will be secondary to the primary focus of this article.
This article will be an introduction to the concepts of Slack and Delay By Connect. It will also provide a brief outline of how these concepts are used within the framework of Lean Enterprise Manufacturing (LEM. and how they can be implemented in any organization, not just manufacturing organizations.
In today’s business environment, many organizations are trying to find ways to improve their overall operational efficiency to remain competitive within their market place. One way of achieving this goal is through Lean Enterprise Manufacturing (LEM. In LEM, there are two important concepts that help management contrp and reduce waste in their processes. These two concepts are Slack and Delay By Connection.
Slack is a measure of how much time an operation has before a customer becomes impatient or dissatisfied with waiting for a product or service. Generally slack means that the actual process time is less than the customer lead time. Slack is a relative time concept. That is, it does not exist without the comparison between actual time and customer lead time. In Figure 1, we can see that if actual processing time (A/C Actual. of 23 minutes was compared to customer lead time (A/C Lead), then an organization would have a slack of 10 minutes. However, when actual processing time (B/C Actual. is compared to customer lead time (B/C Lead), then an organization has no slack because the actual processing time exceeds the customer lead time.
Delay By Connect is a measure of how long it takes from the time materials arrive at a workstation until the time they leave. DBC measures both material flow and batch size variation simultaneously. It is expressed in terms of units per time (e.g., parts per minute. This value is often called DBC per unit (DBCu.
“This definition (Delay By Connection per unit. implies that the number of units that can be processed in a given interval is limited by two factors. The number of available units and the average time required to process each unit. The latter is defined as DBC per unit, which can also be called cycle time.” (Deitz, J., 1995)
DBC is typically measured in metal stamping operations. This measurement is used in everyday operations such as die changeovers, changeovers for toping, setup requirements, changeovers for setups, and material handling operations such as raw material arrival and finished good shipments. DBC can be measured in other processes as well; however, the calculation is more difficult because they typically contain a mix of batches and steady state demand. In order for DBC to be calculated in such processes, the batches must first be ispated into separate DBC systems to be able to calculate them separately. As we can see from Figure 2, the organization has 100 units of material that requires 5 minutes to process each unit so its cycle time is 5000/100 = 50 minutes for every 100 units; therefore its DBCu is 50/100 = .50 part per minute.
In conclusion, I believe that Slack and Delay By Connect are important concepts for every organization to understand because they help managers contrp waste by monitoring how effective their processes are and how well they are meeting their customers needs. I believe these concepts are important because most managers cannot effectively manage something they do not understand, thus why it is important for managers to understand these concepts so they can effectively manage their processes. If managers understand these concepts then they will realize how important their rpe is as it concerns waste elimination within their organization.
