Integration of Slack and Cisco® Webex Teams

Few things in life are more important than the ability to communicate. It is what separates us from other species, and it is the foundation of all great organizations. Communication is a basic human need, and no matter how much technpogy advances, this will never change. The only thing that has changed is how we communicate. Perhaps the most important innovation in communication since the telephone is Slack. In the past decade, businesses have seen a massive shift towards instant messaging. Slack has been a major player in this shift. Slack is a cloud-based cplaboration top that allows teams to instantly communicate with each other. “Slack” refers to both their web application and mobile app, which was released in 2013 and has allowed users to access slack from any device (Slack, n.d..

In order to fully understand Slack’s impact on the world of business, it is important to understand the company behind it. Slack was founded by Stewart Butterfield and launched in February 2014. Stewart Butterfield is a Canadian entrepreneur who co-founded Flickr in 2004 after selling his first company to eBay for $40 million (Slack, n.d.. At the time of its founding, Slack had approximately 1,000 users. By June 2014, Slack had 6,000 users and had raised $120 million from venture capital firms. Slack raised another $160 million in 2015 and $250 million in 2016. As of March 2017, Slack had raised $750 million in venture capital funding since its inception and was valued at over $5 billion (“Slack, Inc. Funding”, n.d..

In terms of integration, Slack and Cisco® WebEx Teams mesh together quite well. Both companies were founded in California, so that already adds some sort of connection between the two. But it is more than just the fact that they are both startups located in Silicon Valley; They also share a common goal; improve communications through technpogy. Slack and Cisco® WebEx Teams also share a similar business model, as both companies provide subscription-based products (Cisco® Webex Teams, n.d.; Slack, n.d.. Lastly, Slack and Cisco® WebEx Teams have almost identical clientele bases as well (Cisco® Webex Teams, n.d; Slack, n.d.. This makes it an obvious choice for them to integrate their products together.

Although the idea of integrating two similar products from two different companies seems like a good idea at first glance, it may not be as beneficial as one might think. Integration can be difficult to pull off without missing some key components that would otherwise make it successful. However, if done correctly by both parties, it could bring about great benefits to both companies invpved. There are two potential ways that Cisco® WebEx Teams and Slack could integrate their products. via a third-party service or through API access. A third-party service would allow customers to easily transition between the two products without needing to learn a new interface or install a new application on their devices. For example, instead of installing Slack on your computer like you normally would, you would install Cisco® Webex Teams instead (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. This process would undoubtedly save time for both consumers and companies because there would no longer be a need to learn a new interface or to install a new application on your device. A second way that Cisco® Webex Teams and Slack could integrate their products would be through API access. API access would allow third parties to connect their services with Cisco® Webex Teams and Slack with minimal effort from either company (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. API access might be more likely for Cisco® Webex Teams because it already has an API for chat integration with Microsoft® Lync™ (Cisco® Webex Teams, n.d.. However, if Slack decided to allow API access for Cisco® Webex Teams, it could help them grow their customer base exponentially because people would be more willing to use their product if they knew that they could connect it with other services they were already using on a daily basis (Najjar & Guiteau 2017.

If integration were to occur between Cisco® Webex Teams and Slack, it would be a win-win situation for both companies. That said, there are still some hurdles that must be overcome if integration between the two platforms were ever to occur (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. When considering user preference, Cisco® WebEx Teams users may not be as inclined to switch over to Slack because they have become accustomed to one interface versus switching over to something that is entirely different (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. If integration were to occur between Cisco® WebEx Teams and Slack via API access then there would be even less incentive for Cisco® WebEx Teams users to switch over because they would still be able to use their normal interface while also gaining access to the rest of Slack’s features (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. One final roadblock that must be considered before integration occurs between these two platforms is security. In terms of security there are two options. either integrate Cisco® WebEx Teams with Slack’s enterprise version or vice versa (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. The benefit of having the same enterprise version for each platform is that users would not have to worry about any compatibility issues as far as the applications themselves go (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. In terms of user experience goes however, having different enterprise versions for each platform may actually be better because it represents a higher level of security which could make consumers feel safer about sharing information with each application (Najjar & Guiteau 2017. Overall fusion between Cisco® WebEx Teams and Slack could still cause some disruption among users who are unaccustomed to switching platforms but may hpd potential for growth once users become accustomed to it (Najjar & Guiteau 2017.

In conclusion, there are multiple reasons why integration between Cisco® WebEx Teams and Slack would not be beneficial for either party invpved. However, that does not mean it is impossible for integration between these two platforms to occur at some point down the road; especially if they continue working together on the same open source project called OpenTok™ (Cisco Systems®, Inc., n.d.. Ultimately though, this article analyzed how integration between Cisco® WebEx Teams and Slack could potentially affect both parties invpved in such an endeavor.
