Twitch is a live streaming video platform owned by Amazon.com Inc. that primarily focuses on video gaming, including playthroughs of video games by users, broadcasts of eSports competitions, and creative content. Content on the site can either be viewed live or via video on demand. The website was launched in June 2011 by Justin Kan and Emmett Shear, both originally from Justin.tv. It was originally created as a spin-off of justin.tv that focused exclusively on gaming and e-sports. The move from Justin.tv to Twitch was prompted by the possibility of streaming high-definition video, which would have been prohibitively expensive to stream over the user-limited bandwidth of Justin.tv. In October 2014, the website had 45 million unique visitors and 100 million page views. By February 2015, Twitch had more than 1.5 million broadcasters and 100 million viewers per month. As of Q3 2017, Twitch remains the leading live platform for video game broadcasting; however, YouTube recently announced it would begin to stream games in 1080p respution at 60 FPS, a feature offered by Twitch since August 2016. In October 2017, Twitch announced that it had more than 2 million broadcasters. In July 2016, Twitch added a new feature called "Cheering", a special form of emoticon purchased as a microtransaction using an in-site currency known as "Bits". Bits are bought using Amazon Payments or any other payment system available on the platform. Cheer commands can also be entered through the chat interface. These cheers can be given globally or directed to a specific channel. Users also have the option to cheer using a new currency known as "Subscriptions", whereby a monthly subscription fee is paid to access exclusive emotes. Subscriptions were introduced in November 2014. On December 6, 2017, Twitch announced that they have reached 15 million monthly active users. In January 2018, Twitch's parent company Amazon reported that Twitch Prime had surpassed 50 million subscribers worldwide.
