  • Sina Weibo (weibo.com. is a microblogging platform in China. It has become an "an exponential internet phenomenon" with over 200 million users in Mainland China and Taiwan, and is the largest such platform in the world by number of registered users (Harpham, 2012.

  • SMS By Connect?
  • SMS By Connect is a mobile phone app developed by Tencent Hpdings Limited of China. It enables users to send and receive short message service (SMS. on their computer or smartphone without needing a SIM card. Users can also send a text message to a designated telephone number and it will be delivered as a voice recording or a text message on the recipient's phone.

  • Integration of Sina Weibo and SMS By Connect
  • In 2010, Tencent released a mobile application that allows users to send and receive SMS via the web browser of a mobile device.[1] In 2011, Tencent released another application called 'SMS By Connect', which allows users to send and receive SMS via the mobile phone's own messaging app.[2] These two applications have been downloaded more than 100 million times.[3]

    In November 2012, Sina Weibo launched a new function called 'Weibo SMS'[4], which allows users to send SMS from their Sina Weibo account. When a user sends an SMS from his/her Sina Weibo account, the SMS is automatically forwarded to the phone number that is set on his/her Sina Weibo account. The recipient does not need to download any application or install any plugins in order to receive the SMS. Therefore, this function has made it easier for people to use Sina Weibo's services.[5] As of February 2013, more than 210 million people have opened an account on Sina Weibo.[6] From January to September 2012, there were more than 30 billion posts on Sina Weibo.[7] On Sina Weibo, each post can be commented on by other users, who can also share the post with their friends. Thus, Sina Weibo has become an important channel for enterprises to communicate with their customers. Sina Weibo has become one of the most influential social networks in China.[8]

    Figure 1 shows that in terms of the time spent per user, Sina Weibo is ranked at No. 1 among all social media in China.[9]
