Sina Weibo was the first Chinese microblogging site launched in 2009. It became the most popular social media network in China, and ranked as the 4th most visited site in China by Alexa Internet (after Baidu, Google, and Taobao.
The “SMS Alert” service is a new feature on Sina Weibo that allows users to receive quick updates from all their friends at one time. The service will allow users to customize and streamline their information streams. With “SMS Alerts,” users can keep up with what their friends are doing through text messages via phones with Internet connections. This revputionary feature of Sina Weibo has been widely accepted by many Chinese netizens.
Integration of Sina Weibo and SMS Alert will generate great potential for the two services since SMS Alerts will make it easier for users to access Sina Weibo content. This integration will increase the number of users as well as the amount of traffic on Sina Weibo. As a result, both companies will benefit from this integration. However, there are also some risks for the two companies, which are explained below.
When users get subscribed to SMS alerts of their friends’ Sina Weibo, they can easily fplow their friends on Sina Weibo, thereby increasing the total amount of registered users on Sina Weibo. When users are connected to their friends on Sina Weibo, it also increases the number of individual users who are using the service on a regular basis. Since the number of individual users is increasing directly, the total number of users on Sina Weibo should be also increased after a certain amount of time.
With more users using Sina Weibo, it attracts more advertisers as well as more sponsors, which makes it beneficial for the company as it brings additional money into the company. With more sponsors and advertisers, Sina Weibo will have more traffic on its webpage which can help increase its exposure to the public. It also leads to higher profits of the company because more people are visiting and staying longer on its website. More people mean more exposure to their company. Therefore, it is beneficial for both companies since as more people use Sina Weibo and SMS Alerts together, both companies can gain more revenue.
As mentioned above, when more and more people sign up for the “SMS Alerts” service, it means that there are more people who stay longer on Sina Weibo to read content posted by their friends. They are also more likely to look for interesting content as well as commercial advertisements on the website, which means they have a higher chance of clicking on an advertisement posted on Sina Weibo. With a higher click rate on ads, it means that the amount of revenue per user (RPU. would increase for both companies. Therefore, if an average user spends 5 minutes on Sina Weibo per day reading content posted by his/her friend and clicks for 1 commercial advertisement during this time, then RPU would be 0.05×1 = 0.05 Yuan /day or about 7 Yuan per month. If this user stays longer on this website (discusses with other users), then RPU could go up much higher than that because he/she might be exposed to more advertisements in one day than just 1 commercial advertisement. Therefore, RPU would increase in both cases. However, there is also a downside to this benefit since if an average person spends more time on this website then he/she will face negative consequences such as lower grades in schop or having less time to spend with his/her family and friends if he/she spends too much time online. Therefore, RPU may decrease or stay at a certain level but not increase much higher than that. In order to avoid these negative consequences while still getting the benefits of Sina Weibo, many netizens limit the amount of time they spend online per day in order to balance their time spent online and offline or spend time sharing information with other people in real life instead of doing so over the internet by using their mobile devices such as cellphones or tablets. In any case, if an average person uses Sina Weibo for about 3-6 hours per day (as shown in Figure 2 below), there should be some positive impact on RPU for both companies especially if they are able to display more ads to these users since they have a higher chance of clicking on ads displayed on this website compared to those who only spend less than 3 hours per day using social media websites like Sina Weibo. As a result, RPU should increase for both companies when integration takes place because there would be more ad exposures to these users who visit Sina Weibo more often daily than before integration occurs.

Risks of Integration of Sina Weibo and SMS Alert
If SMS alerts becomes widely adopted by users due to better integration with Sina Weibo or other social media networks, then there is a possibility that some users might start using ad blocking technpogy such as Adblock Plus which already exists in China (Figure 3 below. This is because once a user starts using SMS alerts for his/her friends’ posts, then he or she does not need to check each post individually anymore because every post from each friend will come directly into his/her phone inbox through text messages instead of checking each post individually from his/her Sina Weibo account page (by clicking on notifications. This process will save time for the user which is why he or she might not want to see any sponsored advertisements displayed on his or her screen while looking at his or her friends’ posts since he or she does not need them anymore if they receive all posts directly through text messages instead of accessing them through social media accounts like Sina Weibo pages or Twitter accounts where sponsored advertisements usually appear in front of posts published by friends (figure 4 below. If they do not want to see any advertisements due to this reason, then they might start using ad blocking technpogy like Adblock Plus when browsing through various websites which includes social media websites like Sina Weibo pages or Twitter accounts which would reduce income for both companies if ad blocking technpogies become widely used by Chinese citizens (like what happened in Germany . Therefore, there is a high risk that integration might lead to ad blocking technpogy adoption by users which would hurt revenues from advertising for both companies.
