Sina Weibo was developed in 2009 by Tencent and Sina, two of the biggest Internet companies in China. Sina Weibo is a microblogging service, which means that users can read from it, write to it, or both. Sina Weibo is a social network platform, much like Twitter, but with more options for users. Users can customize their accounts with “likes” and hashtags. They can like other people’s posts by clicking the red heart button on those posts. Hashtags are a way to organize and categorize posts and users can add them at the end of any post. Hashtags can be searched for and added to a user’s profile page. A user’s profile page is a public page where users can see a user’s posting history and other information about them.
Sina Weibo has been used to connect users to each other, but also as a means of communication between the government and the people, bloggers, celebrities, businesses, and even state-run media organizations. Many Chinese media outlets have official accounts on Sina Weibo, but the government has had some issues with these channels because often they are used to spread false news or rumors. To prevent this from happening, the government has closed certain accounts on several occasions. In early 2017, the Chinese government banned all content from foreign media outlets including CNN, the BBC, The Economist, and the New York Times. Also in early 2017, censors deleted all mentions of Xi Jinping’s name from Sina Weibo.
