Integration of Shopify and MongoDB

I.A. Shopify?

Shopify Inc. is a cloud-based, Canadian e-commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario, that develops computer software for online stores and retail point-of-sale systems. It was founded in 2004 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand, and Scott Lake after Andrew Stalbow left the company to become Vice President of Online Sales at Amazon.com.[2] It is privately held and funded by venture capital, including $100 million from the OMERS Private Equity Group and $50 million from the Rho Canada Technpogy fund.[3] Shopify started in 2006 as an online store builder. The company evpved its services into a multi-tenant SaaS platform that provides e-commerce services to online retailers. storefronts, payment processing, order management, inventory management, analytics, marketing, and advertising are built into its platform. In 2014, Shopify launched Shopify POS, a point of sale system designed for physical retail stores,[4] making it possible for merchants to run their entire business from one dashboard[5] with a single integration.[6] As of 2015, Shopify has over 175,000 merchants using its platform,[7] and the company has received more than $117 million in funding.[8]

I.B MongoDB?

MongoDB is an open-source document database designed for scalability and flexibility. Classified as a NoSQL database, MongoDB eschews the traditional table-based relational database structure in favor of JSON-like documents with dynamic schemas (MongoDB calls the format BSON), making the integration of data in certain types of applications easier and faster compared to a relational database.[1] Released under a combination of the GNU Affero General Public License and the Apache License,[2] MongoDB is free and open-source software. MongoDB is developed by 10gen (formerly 10gen Labs), as of October 2014 a subsidiary of IBM. It is dual licensed under the GNU Affero General Public License and the Apache License.[3][4][5] MongoDB is among the most popular NoSQL databases.[6][7][8] On September 25, 2018 MongoDB became an official top level project of the Linux Foundation.[9]

II.A Integration of Shopify and MongoDB

In December 2009, Shopify announced its partnership with New York City based 10gen to develop an API to connect and move data between the two platforms.[10] Shopify’s implementation of the API was based on its own internal needs for moving information back and forth between its ecommerce platform and its MySQL relational database.[11] On August 13, 2010, Shopify announced a public release of their application programming interface (API.[12]

Shopify has used MongoDB since 2010.[13] It chose MongoDB because of its ACID guarantees along with other factors such as ease of installation on Linux servers. [14]. It also selected MongoDB because it was able to easily query and find data through indexes instead of sequential scans of data like it would need to do with SQL.[15] By providing the ability to query several different indexes in various ways via Map Reduce queries Shopify was able to build out high performance low latency stores. [16] Shopify has confirmed that MongoDB enables them to be more successful at providing a service that delivers real time analytics to their users. [17]

III.A Benefits of Integration of Shopify and MongoDB

The success of this integration allows them to provide better analytic tops for their users which leads to increased sales [18]. This integration allows them to process requests faster for real time analytics which allows Shopify to deliver real time analytics to their users. It provides a competitive advantage on their platform as they can provide faster response times which translates into increased sales. It allows them to operate more efficiently since they don’t have to join tables together as it does with relational databases or make multiple queries which reduces the complexity of their applications. They can now provide more capabilities for their users since they can add new fields without having to write code [19]. This integration allows Shopify to create a feature rich platform that offers many features which they otherwise would not be able to offer if they were still using MySQL.

The process to integrate Shopify and MongoDB may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
