Integration of Shipwire and AWS IOT

In this article, I will talk about the integration of Shipwire and AWS IOT. IOT? Shipwire? What are the benefits of integrating Shipwire and AWS IOT? In the next section, I will briefly describe the technpogies of Shipwire and AWS IOT. Then, I will describe how they work together. Finally, in the conclusion section, I will discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the integration of Shipwire and AWS IOT.

Shipwire?

Shipwire is a 3PL company which connects online retailers to logistics companies like UPS, USPS, DHL and FedEx. Shipwire provides storage centers, fulfillment centers, pick and pack services and inventory management (Shipwire, n.d..

AWS IoT?

AWS IoT is a service built on top of Amazon Web Services (AWS. that enables developers to easily connect their devices with cloud applications via the Internet of Things (IoT. (AWS, 2017.

What are the benefits of integrating Shipwire and AWS IOT?

The integration of Shipwire and AWS IOT helps the retailers offer their customers a convenient way to ship and receive packages. It helps them reduce shipping costs, save time for picking and packing orders and reduce return rates.

In this part, I will describe the steps of integrating Shipwire and AWS IOT. First, I will explain how to integrate Shipwire with AWS using Amazon API Gateway. Then, I will explain how to integrate AWS IoT with Shipwire using Amazon Kinesis Firehose. In the last step, I will explain how to integrate the data into Big Data platform like Hadoop. The flow chart of the integration is shown in Figure 1.

First, we need to decide what kind of data do we want to store in our Big Data platform. We decided to store the quantity of each product in our Big Data platform. The quantity of each product is stored in the form of an event stream. An event stream is a continuous stream of records. Each record has a timestamp, a unique id for each record, and other information like consumerId. The data flow will look like this. “Shipwire” -> “Amazon API Gateway” -> “Amazon Kinesis Firehose” -> “Hadoop” (Figure 2.

First, we integrate Shipwire with Amazon API gateway. At first, we need to create a web service in Amazon S3 with an MQTT endpoint. We use MQTT because it is a lightweight publish-subscribe protocp for messaging between distributed applications (Mqtt.org, n.d.. Then, we configure the topic name in Amazon API Gateway. Next, we register ‘aws iot’ as a resource in Amazon API Gateway and then create a new resource ‘shipwire’ under it. After that, we create a new MQTT subscriber and subscribe to the topic ‘/m2m/shipwireotify’. Finally, we create a Lambda function to process the new events received by this MQTT subscriber (Figure 3. We can also log every new event received by subscribing to some other topic or writing it into some other S3 bucket.

Then, we integrate AWS IoT with Kinesis Firehose. First, we need to create a Kinesis stream in Kinesis Firehose and set up an access ppicy for it (Figure 4. Then, we set up a Kinesis producer and configure it with an S3 bucket for storing data in Kinesis Firehose (Figure 5. After that, we can configure an IoT producer and configure it with a Topic ARN of the Kinesis stream (Figure 6. Now, every event received by Kinesis Firehose will be stored in S3 bucket specified by us. Finally, we can set up an import job in Hive or S3 and run it periodically (Figure 7. This job will read all events from S3 bucket specified by us since last job execution date and load them into our Big Data platform as data table(s. We can also set up an alarm which tells us when there are too many new events in one day so that we can add more capacity (Figure 8. We can also use this alarm as a trigger for our load jobs so that they run more frequently than daily. This ensures that there will be no data loss when there are too many new events in one day (Figure 9.
