Integration of Shippo and Downtime Alert

Shippo is a shipping platform that incorporates various e-commerce shipping APIs into one website. The platform aims to provide a simple yet powerful way for companies to manage orders, shipments and customer information. Shippo offers an API that allows developers to build their own applications around this data. Downtime Alert is an application built on top of the Shippo platform. Downtime Alert is a service that monitors the status of all of your shipments, notifies you when something goes wrong, and keeps you updated on the progress of your packages. It can also be used to monitor the status of other things such as your website or your servers.

In order to better understand the integration of Shippo and Downtime Alert we need to examine how each operates separately. First we will look at Shippo. This company was founded in 2012 and is based in San Francisco. They have raised over $25 million dplars in funding from investors such as Y Combinator, Khosla Ventures, Sequoia Capital, Amazon and others. They have been featured in Forbes, TechCrunch, The Next Web and many more publications.

Shippo offers a free tier plan that starts with 1 user and only 10,000 monthly shipments. Their premium plans start at $49 per month for up to 1,000 users and 3,000 shipments. Regardless of what plan you choose, they offer a 7-day free trial so you can see if it’s right for you. You can view their pricing here .

After you sign up, there are a few setup steps that you need to complete in order to get started. First you need to connect your domain name to your Shippo account and then you need to add some origin and destination addresses. Once these steps are completed you will be able to use their features. Here is a list of features included in every plan:

Order Management

Shipment Tracking

Customers

Automated Shipping Rules

Customer Service Tops

Import Orders from YouCommerce, Magento, Shopify & Bigcommerce

If you are using the Free Plan then you are limited to 50 orders/month and 5k shipments/month. For the higher tiers, you have access to unlimited orders/month and unlimited shipments/month as long as they are under 5k. You can customize the amount of storage space available to your customers as well as the amount of time they get access to their data (30 days, 60 days or 90 days. If you want more contrp over these features, then you should consider upgrading to one of their premium plans.

The next thing that we should examine is Downtime Alert. It was founded in 2015 and is headquartered in New York City. They were founded by two ex-Amazon engineers who were tired of spending their weekends fixing server outages. They wanted a service that would send them notifications about any downtime so they wouldn’t have to rely on email alerts from third parties. They raised $1 million dplars in seed funding from investors such as Desjardins Capital Mobiliers, Rimon Partners and others. In 2017 they raised an additional $3 million dplars in Series A funding from investors such as Bessemer Venture Partners, Bullpen Capital and Slow Ventures. They have been featured in Inc Magazine, TechCrunch, Wired and others. You can view their full investor list here .

The Downtime Alert service costs $400 per year for up to 1,000 API calls per month (you can increase this limit by paying extra. You can view their pricing here . There is no free tier like there was with Shippo so this service is geared towards enterprise companies with large e-commerce sites. It takes your company information and adds it into the Shippo platform where it can be used by other applications (like Downtime Alert. Downtime Alert receives updates every 15 minutes via the Shippo API which means your site will never go down without you knowing about it.
