Integration of Shipcloud and AWS IOT

Shipcloud is a mobile application which is used for tracking of large vessels. Shipcloud is an application that is used for tracking, managing and locating all marine vessels. Shipcloud has become more popular among the seafarers. It simplifies their daily work by providing all relevant information in one place. Shipcloud is a cloud based application which means it can be accessed from anywhere and at any time. Shipcloud integrates with the AWS IoT to make the connection to the seafarers smart phones even more efficient and reliable.

Shipcloud was developed by a Finnish company named ITN. It was launched in 2012. The main aim of the developers was to make seafarers’ lives easier and more comfortable. The main purpose behind the development of Shipcloud was to provide a user friendly application in order to make the use of marine satellite communication devices effective and efficient. It has been widely accepted by seafarers because of its user friendly interface and advanced features.

The main features provided by Shipcloud are:

  • Tracking – Shipcloud provides a facility to track the vessel’s position in real time using Global Satellites Network (GSN.
  • Messaging – Shipcloud allows sending and receiving messages through SMS or email. It also allows sending and receiving data, images, videos etc. to/from the boats.
  • Telephony – Shipcloud offers a telephony service through which seafarers can make international calls at a very low cost. A seafarer can call his family members and relatives within the country at a very low cost.
  • Location – Shipcloud tracks the location of the vessel permanently so that the owner is updated with information about their assets at all times.
  • Mobile App – Shipcloud has a mobile application which can be downloaded on any smart phone by using android or iOS operating system. The mobile app is designed in such a way that it is easy to use and convenient as well. A seafarer can use this app to access all required information regarding his vessel just by having access to a smart phone.
  • Web Based Services – Shipcloud provides web based services for anyone who uses Shipcloud app or website for tracking their marine vessels. They can track their assets from any computer or laptop with internet connection.
  • Cloud Based Platform – Shipcloud does not require any physical infrastructure for its operations because it works on cloud computing platform where all data is stored securely in cloud servers. This cloud based platform ensures that all data is safe and secure even if the device gets lost or damaged due to any other reason.
  • E-learning – All seafarers working on board are trained through e-learning module so that they can learn everything related to their jobs without wasting any time. They can access e-learning modules via internet connection from anywhere around the world.

Once connected, information about position, speed etc is displayed on the screen of his/her smart phone. Now this crew member becomes relieved because he/she will be able to keep track of all activities happening on ship even if he/she is away from ship navigating on sea or docking at some harbor.
