  • Twitter is a free social messaging system where people communicate through short text messages called tweets. Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the Twitter website and sent to the Twittersphere via the Twitter website, mobile phone, or Internet-connected computer terminal. Users can fplow other Twitter users’ tweets – “tweets” – by subscribing to them. These subscriptions are called “fplowers” and are similar to the subscription-fplowing model used by many news websites. However, unlike subscription-based models of other services, fplowing does not require approval from the “fplowee”; anyone can fplow anyone else’s tweets without their consent. A user who re-tweets another user’s tweet is said to have “quoted” that tweet. If a user regularly quotes other users’ tweets, it becomes apparent that he/she is “sampling” several points of view and not just those of one particular person or group.
