Microsoft’s new cloud-based version of its popular Office suite of productivity applications, Office 365, is built atop Microsoft’s Windows Azure platform. In addition to the applications themselves, this means that Office 365 users can store their data on Windows Azure, as well as keep it up to date via synchronization between cloud and local copies of Microsoft Word or Excel files. That synchronization can happen either way — you can push data to the cloud, or pull it back down again. It’s also important to note that Office 365 stores data in multiple Microsoft datacenters around the world for redundancy.
In short, Microsoft has built its own cloud computing service atop its own cloud computing service. And one of the most interesting things about Office 365 is how tightly it ties together those two cloud services — Windows Azure and Office 365 — showing that what was once a hodgepodge of disparate services may be moving towards a more coherent ecosystem.
One example lies in Office 365’s reliance on Windows Azure Active Directory (WAAD), which doesn’t just power single sign-on (SSO. for the online Office applications — including Outlook Web Access, Lync Online, and Office Web Apps — it also serves to secure access for SharePoint Online and Exchange Online services. All of this is tied together by the same interface, which makes it easy for IT organizations to manage all of these services in one place — without having to learn all sorts of different interfaces and user experiences.
Microsoft also mentions integration between Office 365 and its Azure-based Windows Intune service for managing PCs running Microsoft Windows. In particular, Windows Intune will be integrated into the Office 365 portal so that admins can deploy software updates and perform other maintenance tasks from one place. This will make life easier for IT admins who don’t have time to deal with multiple separate portals or separate SSO sessions to get things done. It also ties all of these services together in a way that they’ll be much harder to untangle down the road if Microsoft does decide to split them apart later on.
