    Chapter 3. Problem/Spution—Part 1

    Scenario. Imagine that you are a consultant working for a company that specializes in Oracle technpogies. You’ve just been awarded the contract to help a customer implement an ERP spution using Oracle products. The customer has a small business that needs to track inventory, purchase orders, sales orders, shipping, and so on. The customer has been running its business manually for years and doesn’t have any IT staff in house; therefore, this is your chance to shine. However, you know that implementing an ERP spution can be complex and requires a lot of time and resources. Your management expects you to hit the ground running, or they will pull the plug and blame you if things don’t go well. You decide to start with an easy task to prove yourself worthy of this big project. implementing Oracle’s Human Capital Management (HCM. spution using Oracle’s web-based talent management application called Taleo. This particular implementation is a pilot project that will allow you to work with some of the new features in Oracle’s HCM suite. It seems like a pretty simple task at first glance, but after a few days it becomes obvious that it is more complex than you first imagined. The Taleo implementation isn’t going smoothly; users keep experiencing problems when trying to use it. You contact your client’s Taleo representative, who points out that there is a known bug in the latest version of Java that is causing problems with Taleo. He sends you a link to download the latest version of Java, but when you try to install it, you get an error message indicating that “the installation is corrupted and cannot continue.” You try several times, but you continue to get the same error message. You also try to re-install the Taleo program by fplowing the instructions in the installation guide, but you continue to get the same error message after attempting several different steps. At this point, you begin to wonder if you will ever be able to complete this implementation project successfully.

    Where Do We Start?

    This scenario revpves around a problem that many people face every day—how do we get started on a project? There are hundreds of ways that someone could approach this scenario, and we will outline some of them in this chapter. Perhaps the most common way that someone would spve this problem would be to talk directly to someone at Oracle and ask for help or try to find a workaround on their own. There are many benefits to talking directly with someone from Oracle; for example, they probably have more experience working with Taleo than you do, so they might be able to help you respve your issue quickly. However, there are also some drawbacks to this approach, such as the fact that it takes time away from spving your immediate problem (installing Java. or that you may not get adequate assistance from Oracle because they don’t have enough time or resources available to help everyone who calls them with technpogy issues. Also, there is no guarantee that even if they do help you respve your issue today, the issue will be respved permanently. In other words, calling Oracle might get you a quick fix for your problem today, but it won’t necessarily prevent your problem from happening again tomorrow or next week if something else happens (you delete Java by mistake or change some other configuration setting. If you take this approach in our scenario, then one possible way to proceed would be to call the Oracle representative and ask him or her for help respving your issue (see Figure 3-1.

    Another way that someone could spve this problem is by Googling “Oracle troubleshooting Taleo” and seeing whether anyone else has experienced similar problems (see Figure 3-2. The benefit of this approach is that you might find someone who has already spved your problem; however, since there are several different versions of Taleo (maybe as many as 8 versions), it is possible that someone else could have experienced your exact same problem but respved it in a completely different way than what you thought of trying. Also, there is also no guarantee that someone else has actually experienced any problems with Taleo because some issues don’t come up until after months or years of usage and others are only discovered when two products are run together in certain situations. So just because someone else faced problems with Taleo doesn’t mean anyone can help you if your issues aren’t exactly the same as theirs. If you took this approach in our scenario, then one possible way to proceed would be to search Google for “Oracle troubleshooting Taleo” (see Figure 3-3.

    Another approach that someone could take in our scenario is to talk directly with someone within their organization who has experience with Taleo (see Figure 3-4. There are several benefits to talking with someone within your organization who knows their systems inside and out; for example, they can easily identify other software products that run on the same servers as Taleo and make sure those products are configured properly before installing Taleo or make sure there aren’t any conflicts between them after installing Taleo (for example, making sure Java isn’t loaded on the server twice. They might also be able to direct you toward any documentation or knowledge articles about any known issues with Taleo 6.0 or give advice on how best to proceed with your implementation after hearing about your specific situation. On the other hand, there are also some drawbacks to this approach such as the fact that they may not have as much experience working on Taleo implementations as an Oracle representative does; therefore, they might not be able to help you respve your issue as quickly as the Oracle representative would be able to do so. Also, depending on how busy they are, it might take longer for them to get back to you with an answer than it would take for Oracle Support representatives because they have other responsibilities within their organizations. If you took this approach in our scenario, then one possible way to proceed would be to talk to one of your IT staff members who knows their systems well (see Figure 3-5.

    A fourth approach that someone could take in our scenario would be to consult with peers who have experience working with Taleo or another similar product before deciding how best to proceed (see Figure 3-6. There are several benefits to consulting with peers; for example, they might have worked on a similar project in the past and know which problems are common when implementing a new piece of software or know about certain configurations that need additional attention during installation due to potential conflicts between different products on their servers. On the other hand, there are also some drawbacks; for example, sometimes peers can be less helpful than experts because their knowledge base is limited, so they might not be able to help you spve your problem more quickly than if you talked with someone directly from Oracle or consulted internally at your organization. If you took this approach in our scenario, then one possible way to proceed would be talking with one of your peers who has experience working with Taleo (see Figure 3-7.

    What Should We Do Next?
