Wave is a business social network software that allows users to communicate and cplaborate via chat, audio/video calls, blogs, wikis, social bookmarking, and other media. It is developed by Google for use within organizations. Wave is a free service that is hosted on Google’s infrastructure but requires registration for use. Since its launch on May 21, 2009, it has graduated from Google Labs into a stand-alone product, although it is still in beta. At the time of its graduation it was limited to a few thousand users from the general public who were invited to participate in a stress test of the service prior to its release.
Wave enables real-time communication and cplaboration rather than providing e-mail or forum-based discussions. Each Wave can have multiple channels which are used for different topics or projects. Channels can be open to all participants or restricted to only certain users. Users can post text, photos, drawings, files (embedded or attached), videos and hyperlinks to other websites. Users can also embed any type of object that Google supports via iFrame. Each Wave has a revision history allowing users to see changes made by other users. Wave also supports rich text editing using Markdown syntax. A user can drag photo thumbnails from their computer into a wave to embed them in the document. Multiple users can work on the same document at once and the most recently edited version will be shown in the wave itself until the next change occurs.
