Square is an American financial services company, founded in 2009 by Jack Dorsey, Jim McKelvey and Twitter co-founder Evan Williams. Square’s mobile credit card readers are used in over 800,000 merchants as of May 2015, up from 200,000 merchants in January 2014.

ServiceNow founders Parker Harris and Fred Luddy say they want to keep it that way. “We think that if you try to add too many features, you’ll end up with something that doesn’t work very well,” Harris says. “It’s just not worth it. We’d rather do fewer things really well than a lot of things only okay.”

Square is a point-of-sale merchant services aggregator founded by Jack Dorsey. It provides credit card processing services and free debit card issuance to small businesses and individuals selling items or services in person such as street musicians and food truck vendors. Square Register, an iPad app launched in January 2011, allows sellers using Square Point of Sale to accept payments through an iPad, iPhone, or Android-based device. By October 2013 Square was processing $8 billion in transactions annually, more than double from the year before. By September 2014 Square said it had signed up 1 million sellers to use its card readers but declined to disclose how many were active or how much revenue it has generated. That month it also released Square Stand, which allows card swipes as well as chip card reader processing on an iPad or iPad Mini and competes with similar products from Verifone and Intuit. In December 2014 Square launched Square for Retail, aimed at small business retailers such as coffee shops and salons. In 2015 USAA announced it would use Square for Business in some U.S military bases to process transactions using iPads deployed at kiosks for spdiers stationed there to pay bills with the cards issued by USAA. In June 2016 Square partnered with Apple to make Square Cash available on the Apple Watch; previously the service was only available on iPhones and iPads. As of February 2017 the company had 1.3 million merchants using its payment platform. In May 2017 Square introduced a feature called Instant Deposit for all merchants using its card readers in the United States; Instant Deposit allows them to deposit funds into their bank accounts within one business day instead of waiting two to three days for funds to clear like traditional ACH transfers.
