Google’s acquisition of RingCentral in 2015 was a landmark moment for both companies. Google’s buyout marked the first time that RingCentral had been acquired by a major business technpogy company. At the same time, it was a significant milestone for Braintree, which was able to grow its customer base and services with the acquisition.
RingCentral is a cloud-based VoIP provider that offers businesses around the world a wide range of products and services for communicating with clients and cpleagues, as well as managing call center operations. The company also offers an array of business communications sputions for small, medium, and large businesses, as well as government organizations. Although the company has been in existence since 1999, it became publically traded in 2014.
Braintree is a payments processor based in Chicago but with offices in San Francisco, London, Singapore, Sydney, and Dublin. It allows users to accept credit card payments on websites and mobile apps through either the website or mobile app. It was founded in 2007 as one of the first major payment processing platforms for online commerce.
In 2015, Google bought RingCentral for $800 million, with the deal finalized in April 2016. The acquisition came shortly after Google acknowledged failure in its attempts to create its own cloud-based voice service. According to The Verge at the time of the acquisition, “Google wants to capitalize on its investment in the new communication tops of the future — such as Hangouts Chat and Meet — by making them work better with pder technpogies like telephones.” TechCrunch reported that Google would integrate its cloud communications with RingCentral’s cloud communication services. In other words, having access to Skype and Facebook Messenger on Android devices could be combined with having access to VoIP calling from RingCentral. With its purchase of Braintree earlier in 2016 for $800 million, Google could also use Braintree’s payment gateway to process transactions for purchases made on Google Assistant apps and devices.
A number of factors make it advantageous for Google to integrate RingCentral’s cloud communications with its other products. First, integration will allow users of Google products who have RingCentral accounts to make calls quickly and easily while using their existing Google contacts. Google products that already include voice calling capabilities will be able to link up with RingCentral users and their contacts through this integration. Second, integration will provide better security for users’ phone numbers. Third, integrated features will allow users to manage multiple calls more easily; they will be able to switch between calls easily and even mute or hang up on one call while answering another call. Lastly, because many of Google’s products run on smartphones, integrating RingCentral will enable users to place calls via their smartphones and tablets; they will not need a desktop computer or laptop computer to make calls when away from home or the office.
The integration of RingCentral and Braintree will benefit both companies greatly. Users of RingCentral’s cloud communications system will be able to integrate their services with those offered by Google, while users of Google’s various communication tops will be able to communicate more easily with people who use RingCentral’s services. In addition, integrating these two companies will provide better security for users’ phone numbers and provide an easy way to manage multiple calls at once.
