What is Office 365? – IWhat is Basecamp Classic? – IIn the early days of the internet, there was no such thing as social media. People were using the internet to communicate with one another in different ways. The first form of social media was e-mail. E-mail provided people with a way to connect with others across the world but it wasn’t until the creation of forums that people were given a platform to communicate with each other without having to send an e-mail. Forums allow people to use different subject lines to organize conversations into topics. There was a lot of confusion at first about how to use forums because they were an entirely new way for people to communicate with each other. Eventually, forums became more organized and easier to use and they gained popularity. A forum called the “Forum for People Who Are Serious About Using Macs” was created in 1998 and it was soon fplowed by “The Apple General Forum” (Apple Inc., n.d.. These two forums were the beginning of what would become a huge online community. In 2000, these two forums were combined into one forum called the Apple Support Communities which would soon be renamed the Apple Discussions (Apple Inc., n.d.. This forum grew so quickly that in 2002, it was incorporated into Apple’s website as a part of their support section along with information about common problems, system requirements, hardware specifications, and software updates. The information provided on this site was created for people who needed help with their computers or any kind of technical troubleshooting. It still didn’t offer a way for people to cplaborate or share ideas with each other. That changed when 37signals developed a project management app called Basecamp (37signals, n.d.. They started out by developing a simple web app that allowed companies to host their internal projects online. Shortly after 37signals developed Basecamp Classic, they also put together a forum called Campfire (37signals, n.d.. Campfire was a simple way for users to post messages to each other in a style similar to Twitter or Facebook chat. Since Campfire integrated directly with Basecamp Classic, one could use Campfire to discuss projects in real time which increased cplaboration. This was the first time that anyone had ever integrated a chat room directly with a project management app and it has since been copied by many other companies. In 2013, 37signals created a new version of Basecamp called Basecamp Next (37signals, n.d.. In order to accommodate all of the features that came along with Basecamp Next, 37signals made Basecamp Classic free for everyone and gave users the choice to migrate their account from Basecamp Classic to Basecamp Next (37signals, n.d..Basecamp Classic was created as an online project management application that allowed its users to cplaborate on projects in real time while still allowing them to access their projects offline via an iPhone or iPad (37signals, n.d.. Users could create projects that contained tasks and sub-tasks within those projects. Projects could also contain files that users could attach to each task or sub-task. Each task or sub-task could have its own comment section where users could discuss assignments together in real time via Campfire (37signals, n.d.. Features were added over time including milestones and time tracking capabilities. Basecamp Classic used a notification system where users would receive an email notification when someone commented on their task or when someone commented on a task that they had commented on previously (37signals, n.d.. Users could also subscribe to messages sent through Campfire which would cause a pop-up window to appear on their screen whenever a new message was posted (37signals, n.d.. These features allowed users to stay up-to-date with the progress of their projects without having to constantly check on them throughout the day. 37signals did have a free version of their product but you had to pay if you wanted to upgrade your account or get additional features like unlimited storage space or domain hosting (37signals, n.d.. Basecamp Classic was originally designed only for personal use but it did have a professional version available that allowed businesses to upgrade their accounts without paying more money (37signals, n.d.. Basecamp Classic was replaced by Basecamp Next in 2013 (37signals, n.d..Basecamp Next is very similar to Basecamp Classic except it has more features than its predecessor due to the nature of its integration with Office 365 (Microsoft Corporation, n.d.. One feature that was added is called Projects Pro (37signals, n.d.. Projects Pro allows companies to use Basecamp as their main project management spution instead of just using it as an add-on for Office 365 (37signals, n.d.. Another feature that was added is called Projects Plus which enables companies that are using Office 365 to track things like budgets, expenses, and invoices all from inside of Basecamp (Microsoft Corporation. With Projects Plus companies can monitor employee hours and then create invoices based on those hours which will automatically be sent out via email (Microsoft Corporation. A third feature available with Basecamp Next is called Projects Enterprise which allows companies that use Microsoft Exchange Online to have access to their projects anywhere via Outlook Web App (Microsoft Corporation. If you are subscribed to Office 365 you can add another layer of security to your Basecamp account by purchasing one of several different plans from 37signals called Work2Secure which will give you access to things like single sign-on capability and two factor authentication (37signals.

Basecamp Next uses standard Microsoft Office 365 apps like SharePoint Online and Exchange Online which are included in every Office 365 subscription package (Microsoft Corporation. The integration between SharePoint Online and Exchange Online allows you to create contacts directly in your inbox without having to leave your email client (Microsoft Corporation. By integrating directly with SharePoint Online and Exchange Online, all of your projects are stored online which makes them accessible anywhere you go as long as you have an internet connection (Microsoft Corporation.
