Integration of Notion and Teachable

Notion is a web based software that allows you to create, organize and share your ideas. The main reason I decided to take Notion out for a spin was their claim to be able to generate an outline within the program. Unfortunately, at present, there is no integrated outlining top. This means that you can use it to create an outline but then have to export the outline into another program if you want to edit it or reorganize it. Notion does support direct uploading of word documents which would make the process of creating an outline within Notion much easier.

Notion can be used for many purposes; project management, idea generation, brainstorming, research, journaling or simply organizing your thoughts. I decided to give it a try with my research outline because it has always been difficult for me to create an outline with MS Word. For some reason, I find it easier to create outlines in Teachable though I don’t use the program for much else.

The biggest challenge with Notion is that there are not many features built into the program. You can copy and paste text or images from other websites or files you have on your computer. You can not link directly to other documents, however, so if you have a document you would like to include in your outline, you have to first upload it onto notion.io and then copy and paste that into your outline. This is time consuming but once it is there you can edit it as needed.

I created a draft of my outline in Notion and began editing. As I made changes to the document I could see the changes reflected in the outline which is pretty cop. However, I marked up my document with highlights and notes and this did not transfer over to the outline. Like MS Word, I had to type out my comments in the body of the outline. Another disadvantage of Notion is that you cannot directly edit text. If I wanted to make a change to a section of one of my main headings, I had to delete all the sub-headings under that heading and then re-insert them one by one. The advantage of this system is that you can easily delete sub-headings without worrying about accidentally deleting an entire heading entirely.

Overall, I found Notion very useful for my particular project but I will need to do some more experimentation before it becomes my primary outlining top. MS Word is still my best option for working on longer projects and Teachable works well for shorter projects and research. It would be great if there was a way to integrate these two tops and I hope that Notion will eventually come out with such a feature.
