Integration of Notion and DEAR Inventory

Notion and DEAR Inventory are two popular and effective ways of teaching children. I will talk about what each is and about their integration.

  • Notion is a way of teaching children to read by teaching them to think ahead. It teaches the child to “not think about the next word, but think about the concept of the next sentence” (Hagen, 2009, p. 1. In this way, the child learns to read by thinking about what comes next instead of just reading the words on the page. This is effective because it helps the child to understand the meaning of what they are reading instead of just focusing on how they sound.
  • DEAR is a behavior rating scale that helps teachers track a child’s behavior throughout the day. It uses a rating system from 0-5 with one being the best rating. If a rating is given for a behavior, then there must be a description as to why the rating was given. For example, if a rating is given as a 3, then there must also be a description as to why it is a 3.
  • Integrating Notion and DEAR Inventory will be beneficial for teachers and students alike. Integration will allow DEAR to help keep a record of a child’s behavior and chart it over time. This will help teachers determine what works and what doesn’t work in regards to discipline. It will also allow teachers to determine if the child is progressing or not. Integration will allow teachers to use Notion as part of their classroom management plan. Teachers will be able to incorporate Notion into their classrooms because it is non-punitive and focuses on learning instead of discipline.
