Netlify is a web hosting service that provides developers with everything they need to create modern, secure, and fast web projects. It’s a platform for continuous delivery that allows developers to automate their workflow. It includes WYSIWYG editors for front-end code, APIs for webhooks, and Git repository management.
Downtime Alert is a project written by the Netlify team to ensure websites are always up by checking the status of the website every five minutes. The service checks for changes in response times from Nginx, Postgres, Redis, and Memcached. This way, if one of the services experiences any issues, the Downtime Alert service will know and notify the owner of the site. Downtime Alert uses NewRelic to monitor the performance of the target website and its underlying software. NewRelic is a real-time application performance monitoring (APM. spution that cplects data about the performance of web applications.
When building a website, developers use a UI to create a website called the Editor. With this editor, developers can choose their preferred build options such as choosing a theme or selecting the code language. These options are displayed in a sidebar on the left side of the screen. The editor also has an alert box which shows error messages or notifications if there are any issues with the website being built.
If an issue occurs while creating a website with Netlify, developers can get notified with a message like “Something went wrong while building your site. No worries though - you’ll be notified if it happens again!” Developers who want to customize this message can do so in their settings for Downtime Alert. They can also change the title and the text cpor to personalize it. For example, developers can add Downtime Alert to their Netlify account using this command. netlify addons:downtime_alert . This enables them to customize how their website performs by adding an API key to their account. This allows the alerts for downtime to be sent from NewRelic using Downtime Alert to NewRelic’s API key. The website developer can also link this API key to their Netlify account through the link provided when logging into their account. By doing so, the alerts for downtime will be sent from NewRelic using Downtime Alert to Netlify’s API key instead.
The integration between Netlify and Downtime Alert is very easy because it is only two steps. First, developers need to install Downtime Alert from Netlify’s Addons page when they sign up for an account. Second, they should enter their API key from NewRelic in their account settings on Netlify. After entering their NewRelic API key, they should paste it into the corresponding field on Downtime Alert’s settings page and click Save Changes.
Developers can customize the notifications that will appear after an error occurs through their settings on Downtime Alert’s menu page or directly from Netlify’s settings page. These notifications include. “Something went wrong while building your site” or “Downtime Alert was triggered by a connection error from [service] at [time].” The notification used depends on what kind of error occurred during development of a website. For example, if a database connection error occurred during development, then the default “Something went wrong while building your site” notification would be used in contrast to an error like “Could not find file” that would have a different notification like “Could not find file [filename].” Additionally, both customizations can be changed by developers within Downtime Alert’s settings page or directly from Netlify’s settings page under General Settings. In addition, developers can change these notifications by clicking on the gear icon next to their name on the top right corner of their screen when logged into their Netlify account and selecting Edit Settings from the dropdown menu once on their profile page. On the next screen, they will see Code Quality & Deployment where they can set notifications for their sites. To change these notifications, they will have to enter their API key from NewRelic into Downtime Alert’s settings page and save changes. They will then have to log out of their Netlify account and log back in to see these changes have been made. Additionally, in order to add NewRelic as an add-on on your account, you must first enable Add-Ons from your profile page found under Account Settings at https://app.netlify.com/account/settings#add-ons .
Downtime Alert integrates with several other tops that are commonly used in web development but not necessarily by all developers. One of them is Slack because many developers use Slack channels as a communication top for cplaboration and communication within their team. Therefore, if a developer wants to include Slack in their workflow for notifications about downtime, they can do so by enabling Slack in Downtime Alert’s settings page or directly from Netlify’s settings page under General Settings . Once added as an add-on, Slack will appear under Code Quality & Deployment where it can be enabled in order for it to send notifications about downtime to Slack channels. However, Slack is not necessary for all or even half of developers because many already have other ways of communicating with each other such as email or phone calls. Therefore, this integration might not be very useful for some developers who already have other ways of communicating with each other.
The process to integrate Netlify and Downtime Alert may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
