Integration of MongoDB and ActiveCampaign

The purpose of this article is to compare and contrast MongoDB and ActiveCampaign. The first thing that needs to be done is choosing key terms. Key terms are words or phrases that are used to describe a topic. MongoDB is defined as an open-source document database, while ActiveCampaign is defined as an email marketing and automation platform. Both products have different purposes but can be made to work together to complete a project.

MongoDB is an open-source document database that was created in 2009 by 10gen, Inc. (“MongoDB”. It is developed in C++ and uses JavaScript on the server side. MongoDB uses JSON (JavaScript Object Notation), which is a lightweight data-interchange format. One of the biggest advantages with MongoDB is that it has no predefined schema, so there is no need to define what data will be stored before adding it. This creates a dynamic structure within the database that allows for easier growth and expansion. Another advantage with MongoDB is that it has very high availability and supports multiple data centers at once. According to the MongoDB website, “In fact, our standard configuration uses multiple replica sets and shards to provide automatic data resiliency without sacrificing performance” (“MongoDB”. The last advantage that I will mention on MongoDB is that it’s really fast. MongoDB is capable of storing and retrieving data in milliseconds. One disadvantage of MongoDB is that it lacks support for ACID transactions. It does support atomic operations like save, update, remove, and delete. Another disadvantage of MongoDB is that it has no support for foreign keys. A foreign key is when two tables point to one another. Although foreign keys do exist in MongoDB, they cannot be enforced by the database itself, so application logic must be implemented if it’s needed.

ActiveCampaign is an automated marketing platform that was created in 2013 by HubSpot. It was acquired and now provides email marketing, customer engagement, lead generation, reporting tops, and more (“About ActiveCampaign”. ActiveCampaign uses SQLite on the backend, which is a self-contained embedded database engine. It runs in a single process and handles all requests directly from the process memory without relying on any other processes. One of the most notable advantages of ActiveCampaign is its Sync Engines. ActiveCampaign has multiple data storage options, including PostgreSQL, MySQL, and SQLite. Sync Engines were created to help keep ActiveCampaign up to date with new features and bug fixes. Each Sync Engine’s job is to take all the changes from the master branch and push them down to their respective databases. With this system, only one database will have any change applied at any given time, so you can be sure that your data will not get corrupted or become out of sync with another database. Another advantage with ActiveCampaign is the ability to schedule tasks and assign users for specific tasks from within the software itself. This saves time trying to find someone who knows how to use a certain piece of software or perform a certain task. The last advantage I will mention regarding ActiveCampaign is its integrations with other platforms, such as Zapier, Google Analytics, Google Adwords, Facebook Pixel, Instagram Ads, LinkedIn Ads, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, Zendesk, Slack, WordPress, WooCommerce, MailChimp, Shopify, Ontraport, Infusionsoft and GoDaddy (“ActiveCampaign Integrations”.

After closely comparing and contrasting these two products, there are many similarities between them. Both products allow users to integrate their own custom code into their projects using API’s (Application Program Interfaces. They both have active developer communities who are constantly updating their software through new versions. They are both easy to learn and use if you are already familiar with SQL databases or JavaScript development. The biggest difference between MongoDB and ActiveCampaign is the lack of schema support in MongoDB compared to ActiveCampaign’s support for schema-based databases. With MongoDB lacking schema support you could be missing out on some great features and benefits that ActiveCampaign offers with its schema support systems.
