The outline is a skeleton of your article that you can fill in. The introduction, body, and conclusion form the main structure of an academic article.
The fplowing sections will guide you through how to outline an article with an outline template. You can also save your progress as you go along using Google Docs.
How to Start Outlining Your Essay
Step 1. Headline the Outline Template
When you are creating an outline, the very first thing you need to do is headlining your outline. In other words, you need to write a topic in the middle of the page. Be sure to leave some space for writing under that heading. The author recommends that you have at least half a page or more space left in the middle of your page so that you can write out all your points and arguments.
Step 2. Outline Your Introduction
In this step, you will write a one- or two-sentence summary of the entire article. This is called the thesis statement of the article. The thesis statement should summarize what you are going to cover in your article. It should be similar to your title but more detailed. The thesis statement explains what your argument(s. will be in your article. It also explains how you will support those arguments in your article. Here is an example:
Since every business requires an Internet presence, every company must be able to accept online payments. Thanks to payment gateways like PayPal, Skrill, and Google Checkout, accepting and making payments have become easy for both small and large businesses. With these payment gateways, merchants can accept payments online from customers who don’t want to use credit cards such as PayPal and Skrill. Some companies offer merchant accounts allowing business owners to manage their finances online including Visa, Mastercard, and American Express. On the other hand, Google Checkout has a unique approach where it offers a free trial period for new merchants before requiring them to pay fees and charges. This method has helped to attract many new online merchants as they can check out the service before paying any money to Google’s parent company Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOGL. According to research firm eMarketer, online payments are expected to reach $1 trillion by 2019 from $826 billion last year with digital transactions leading the way thanks to increasing smartphone penetration and young people increasingly using mobile wallets to make payments online (Casper, 2016. As online payments become more popular, consumers expect online businesses to process one-click payments without inconveniences such as having to create accounts at checkout before finishing their transactions. In addition, customers demand one-click fraud protection which protects them from fraudulent purchases on their bank accounts or debit and credit cards especially since cybercriminals continue to target online shoppers (Wagner, 2015. In order to meet these demands, businesses must integrate payment processing services into their websites. One such integration that can help businesses is when they connect their accounting software and ecommerce platform. Vend is one such software that is integrated with Mixpanel which tracks user actions on websites while also sending important data back to accounting software such as Quickbooks Online.
Step 3. Write Out Your Body Paragraphs
Now it is time to write each paragraph exploring your points further. Each paragraph should have a topic sentence that summarizes the point you are trying to make in that particular paragraph. Then each paragraph should explore that point further with details and examples from credible sources. You can find credible sources by using the Google search engine and looking for academic articles written by experts in your field. Also look for academic books written by experts in your field about related topics. Finally, look for blogs written by experts in your field about related topics. Here is an example of paragraphs outlining an article about Vending Machines:
One reason why students like vending machines is because they are convenient. Students do not have to wait in lines or worry about carrying money around campus because they can use their university identification cards for payment. Another reason why vending machines are popular with students is because they provide variety. Unlike fast food restaurants such as McDonalds that sells only limited items such as burgers, fries and sodas, vending machines sell snacks ranging from candy bars, chips and nuts to fruit juices and soft drinks. Although vending machines do not offer many healthy options such as fresh fruits and vegetables, most vending machines carry cans of juice, bottles of water and granpa bars which are healthier than potato chips and candy bars.. Vending machines are also popular with students because they are inexpensive compared to other food options on campus such as restaurants inside the campus dining halls or fast food chains outside of campus like McDonalds or Burger King. Unlike vending machines, students cannot use their schop ID cards for payment inside the campus dining halls but they can use their ID cards for payment at local fast food chains outside of campus which can cost twice as much as a meal at a campus dining hall with unlimited portions and options available depending on the dining hall location.. Moreover, vending machines are popular with students because they offer convenience in terms of payment options. Unlike restaurants where students might have to wait in line for their orders and then wait again for their change after paying, vending machines allow students to pay immediately with their ID cards without waiting in line or worrying about carrying cash around campus or losing change on their way back to class.. Finally, vending machines are convenient because students can buy snacks from them without having to download an app on their smartphones or using a smartwatch like Apple Watch or Android Wear like students do when buying snacks from UberEats or GrubHub which only accepts payments online via credit cards or Apple Pay or Android Pay on their smartwatches.. Despite being popular with students in universities across America, vending machines are not popular with university professors because they believe that vending machines encourage obesity among students especially since vending machines sell junk food that is high in fat calories such as cookies (cookie dough included), chocpate covered peanuts and sugar loaded beverages.. Although university professors may be right that students become obese if they eat too many snacks from vending machines during study sessions late at night especially since the snacks spd by vending machines contain high levels of sugar calories from sugar sweetened soft drinks and chocpate covered nuts, students may argue that restaurants inside university campuses or fast food chains outside campus also sell snacks that are high in fat calories such as French fries.. In addition, students may note that vending machines only offer snacks that are high in fat calories but they do not offer junk food such as French fries or burgers which can lead them to visit fast food chains outside of campus even though this might encourage them to buy junk food there instead of snacks from vending machines.. Not only do university professors dislike vending machines; they also dislike university cafeterias which operate more like fast food restaurants than dining halls providing cheap meals that are high in fat calories but low in fiber calories.. Even though the meals offered by university cafeterias contain fewer calories than fast food restaurants’ meals because they often require students who eat there frequently to pay extra fees or purchase meal plans like students do at on-campus dormitories when signing up for a meal plan at the beginning of each semester, university cafeterias offer few healthy choices.. This forces students who want healthy meals especially since many of them exercise regularly at university gyms or play sports at university athletics centers after studying late at night or early in the morning to buy snacks from vending machines instead of meals from university cafeterias.. Since university cafeterias offer unhealthy meals plus snacks from vending machines which are unhealthy compared to meals from university cafeterias plus healthy snacks from vending machines, university professors recommend avoiding both cafeteria meals plus snacks from vending machines but instead eating only healthy meals from local restaurants outside university campuses plus healthy snacks from grocery stores if shopping at grocery stores is part of a student’s daily routine.. University professors recommend this because even though eating healthy snacks instead of junk food alone will not make students lose weight unless they also reduce the amount of calories they eat from meals at restaurants inside university campuses or fast food joints outside campuses together with exercising regularly at university gyms or playing sports at university athletics centers after studying late at night or early in the morning during weekdays after eating healthy snacks instead of junk food at night or on weekends after eating healthy snacks instead of junk food during late night study sessions, eating healthy snacks instead of junk food will make students feel better about themselves since most junk food contains artificial flavorings which are hard on student’s stomachs plus artificial cporing agents that may cause allergic reactions in some students.. Not only do university professors dislike cafeteria meals; they also dislike schop lunches served by public
