Integration of Mixpanel and Netlify

Mixpanel is a San Francisco-based analytics company that provides a platform for tracking actions and events from a website or mobile app. It was started in 2009 by Suhail Doshi and Tim Trefren. Today, Mixpanel has more than 6,000 customers including AirBnB, Pandora, Twitter, GitHub, Lyft, Walmart, Instacart, and many more. Mixpanel also provides a wide variety of integrations such as Google Analytics, Salesforce, Intercom, Slack, Zendesk, Webtrends, Segment, etc.

Netlify is a PaaS (Platform-as-a-Service. with an emphasis on static site generation. Netlify was founded in 2015 by Mathias Biilmann and Matt Biilmann. The main goals of Netlify are to provide great user experience, fine-grained contrp over content delivery, and high uptime. Netlify has started providing Mixpanel support recently and it offers a few features that are unique to integrating Mixpanel with Netlify:

When a new site is created using the Netlify CLI, Mixpanel gives you an option to generate a report of the current site activity. You can also configure Mixpanel to create a new site which includes pre-populated data.

When you install the Netlify CLI you can pick the Mixpanel integration when you deploy sites to Netlify.

Netlify will cplect visitor information even if the site is not using the Netlify CMS.

Integration of Mixpanel and Netlify

Integrating Mixpanel and Netlify requires three steps:

  • Install the Netlify CLI

$ npm install -g netlify-cli@^0.11.0

  • Register your site on Netlify

The first thing you need to do is sign up for a free account on Netlify. Once you have signed up, you will need to register your site. Click on the “New Site” button on the top right corner of your dashboard and then click “Connect existing site”:

You will be prompted to enter your source code repository URL:

You will then be prompted to choose one of the fplowing options. git clone URL or push into your own Git repository (GitHub or Bitbucket):

If you use the Git clone method, you need to configure the repository URL with your credentials:

After defining your source code repository, you will be able to see all of the site files on Netlify as well as an option to add new files:

Once your site is registered on Netlify, you can start creating the integration with Mixpanel. To do this you need to go back to your dashboard and click on “Settings” next to your site name:

Once you click on “Settings” you will need to click on “Advanced Settings” at the bottom of the page:

You will then need to click on “Tracking” at the top of the “Advanced Settings” page:

You now need to click on “Add Tracking Code”:
