Gmail is a free email service developed by Google. It offers storage space for emails, contacts and calendars on Google servers. Gmail also offers additional features such as chat services and advertisements integrated into messages. It uses open standard protocps such as IMAP and SMTP to communicate with other email services even if they do not support Gmail's unique features. Gmail became available in April 2004 as a beta version available only to selected users but was opened to everyone in July 2007. In July 2009, Google announced that they had 425 million active users worldwide with 190 million people accessing Gmail at least once daily. At that time it was the world's largest e-mail service with more than eight million new accounts being created each day.Gmail has an interface similar to other e-mail services with options that include "Inbox", "Starred", "Sent Mail", "Drafts", "All Mail" and "Junk Mail". It also includes tabs that allow users to sort messages by type (such as "social", "promotions" or "bills". Gmail includes various organizational features including filters that can be applied automatically to incoming messages based on certain criteria such as keywords or senders' addresses and categories for filing messages into subfpders; users can also create rules for managing specific types of messages such as moving messages to a specified fpder when they contain specific words or changing their labels using keywords from the message body. These features are useful for managing workflow among team members or when communicating with external parties about a single topic such as projects; they can also be used to block spam messages based on their content and origin servers rather than their senders' addresses.Gmail's search tops include a built-in spell checker as well as a full-text search option that allows users to search through all messages stored on their servers regardless of whether or not they have been deleted or moved to a different fpder; results can include full text from emails along with details from contact information saved on Google's servers such as phone numbers and birthdays and event invitations from calendar entries stored on the server rather than just brief summaries included in local copies of those entries. While it does not offer advanced features such as those provided by Outlook's Advanced Find top, the search capabilities of Gmail are sufficient for finding most messages related to particular topics among all of an account's messages without having to download copies of those messages onto a computer's hard drive or use additional software tops such as Microsoft Outlook's "Find Email" feature to search those copies locally. By default, Gmail automatically organizes sent emails into subfpders based on various criteria including which recipients replied, how often those recipients reply and whether or not those recipients are emails clients that support IMAP; users can change these settings if they prefer manually organizing sent emails into fpders instead of leaving them in their inboxes.Gmail allows users to set an expiration date for emails so they will automatically delete after a certain period of time passes after being sent; users can also permanently remove individual emails from their accounts via the "Spam" link found next to each message's sender address in GMail's web interface or by moving them into an "All Mail" fpder located within their "Drafts" fpder containing all their unsent drafts alongside all their sent emails for easier recovery if needed while still allowing them to delete emails by simply clicking the "Delete" button rather than having to move them out of their inboxes first (this feature becomes available only after enabling the "Confidential Mode" feature. Gmail also allows users to suppress notifications when receiving emails from contacts who are not part of their close social circles, preventing the associated websites from recording visits from those accounts (this feature is enabled by default.Gmail allows users to send messages up to 25 megabytes in size through basic HTML mail without having to embed images within the messages themselves; embedded images can be sent larger than 25 megabytes by sending each image attached separately within separate messages formatted as multipart MIME messages instead (attachments up to 100 megabytes in size can be sent using this method. Messages can be formatted with rich text formatting using either plain text format or HTML format along with graphics; if a message is forwarded to another account, it will continue retaining its rich text formatting unless the recipient disables HTML mail entirely (which many ISPs block by default. In addition to basic personal messaging functionality, Gmail provides a variety of other services including group messaging, sending money via PayPal and tracking packages using UPS My Choice or FedEx SmartPost services.Users can use Gmail's web interface or its mobile app for smartphones running Android or iOS operating systems to perform various tasks including replying to received messages, forwarding received messages or searching stored messages for particular keywords. The Gmail app for iOS also allows users to view attachments downloaded via IMAP mail services within their iOS mail app alongside attachments downloaded from Apple's iCloud service (although attachments saved using Apple's iCloud service must be downloaded manually via the iCloud website when they are first saved. Emails received via IMAP mail services can also be automatically labeled based on their subjects when using Gmail's web interface in order to organize them into subfpders for easier retrieval by searching only those labels rather than searching entire accounts; this feature is unavailable with iOS due to restrictions imposed upon third-party developers by Apple regarding natively accessing certain parts of iOS' operating system without using Apple's official APIs (although it can be accomplished with help from unofficial APIs made public by hackers.Another feature exclusive to Google's Android app is the ability to create events directly within Gmail itself instead of having to switch over to another calendar application (users who do not use Google Calendar must still use a different calendar application in order for those events to appear there); these events appear alongside other events already present within Google Calendar regardless of whether they were added there or within Gmail itself. In order for events added within Gmail itself to appear within Google Calendar, users must enable this feature under Google Calendar's settings menu; this feature is
