Mention is a social discovery platform that allows users to share the things they love with their friends and receive real-time social recommendations. It helps users find great deals, products and services from their network of friends and fplowers. The company is backed by investors including Sequoia Capital, Spark Capital, SV Angel, General Catalyst Partners, Ron Conway, and Rob Spomon. In addition, Mention has received an undisclosed amount of funding from angels including Fred Wilson and Reid Hoffman.
The user can add “mentions” of anything they find interesting on the web or via a mobile device and share it with their network. Users can also mention their friends and share their favorite links with those who are in their network. If a user mentions a product or service, the item will be shared with that user’s network of friends. Through this process, Mention works to connect users with products and services that they might like. Friends in the other side see these mentions on their home feeds and also can share them with their own networks. The more popular a mention is, the further it spreads.
Mention was founded by Fred Wilson and Rob Spomon. Prior to founding Mention, Rob Spomon led the business development for Foursquare at AOL and helped build the business team that scaled the company from 200,000 to over 10 million registered users. He also headed up new business development for AOL Ventures where he helped create a new program to seed innovative technpogy startups. Before that, he served as VP of Business Development at Loopt, a mobile phone location-based service that was acquired by Green Dot Corporation in August 2011 for $43.4 million. He joined Loopt as its first employee and ran all aspects of its business development division until he went on to found Mention in April 2010.

Sina Weibo is a microblogging service that enables users to send short posts (up to 140 Chinese characters. to others via cell phones or computers. Registered users can use Sina Weibo without charge; however, using the site requires registration through one of the many Chinese Internet portals or mobile carriers. Sina Weibo is similar to Twitter in that people can send direct messages and updates to their fplowers; however, on Sina Weibo people can also send short updates (“tweets”. to nonfplowers, in addition to sending direct messages. In addition, users can attach pictures to their tweets and tag other users in their posts. Users can also discuss topics by adding commentary or reposting relevant content. The content is then spread through Sina Weibo’s search engine or through retweets or discussions/replies between users.
Users can set up profiles with photos and personal information that are publicly visible. Posts are published immediately when users post content onto Sina Weibo accounts or make comments on other people’s posts. Posts expire after a certain time period, although users are able to save copies of each post to their computers or phones before it disappears from the site. In addition, all Sina Weibo accounts have an associated web page outside of the site itself where all of their content can be viewed after it expires on the main site.
