The company markets integrated business phone system, unified communications with features such as voicemail, conferencing, and faxing, as well as software for mobile devices. It became a publicly traded company on April 9, 2013.RingCentral was founded by Jeffrey A. Crook, Christopher J. Spanos, and Brad Bower in 2003 and began operations in 2004 out of the San Francisco, California area. RingCentral's early investors included Charles River Ventures, Lightspeed Venture Partners, August Capital, Draper Fisher Jurvetson, and Shasta Ventures. With this release RingCentral also went to a per user pricing model replacing the traditional upfront licensing and maintenance fee model. The new pricing model allows customers to pay only for users added or removed from their account at any time during their subscription period. Early customer response to the announcement was mixed with one analyst suggesting that while the new pricing model was very attractive there was some concern over how it might affect sales and marketing coverage since revenue will be spread across all of RingCentral's product lines instead of concentrating on one specific product line. On July 9th 2014 RingCentral announced that it will reduce its workforce by 15% to 70 employees due to a restructuring in order to keep up with competitive pressures in cloud telephony industry. As part of the reduction RingCentral also updated some of its products namely removing an ability for customers to receive faxes directly from email inboxes and also removing the ability for customers to send faxes from RingCentral Office desktop client. During this same period RingCentral launched a new email API for developers allowing them to build sputions such as click to dial into conference calls right from an email inbox through an HTML email template integration.In September 2014 RingCentral announced that it has reached 1 million monthly active user milestone while adding more than 100k new users every month.On October 2nd 2017 RingCentral announced an update to its mobile app that will let users make calls over Internet Protocp using VoIP technpogy when they are out of cellular range or connected via Wi-Fi. This feature was originally announced at Mobile World Congress in February 2017 but was delayed due to connectivity issues with the Wi-Fi calling feature on iOS 11 which was eventually fixed in the fall update for iOS 11 . The feature will allow users to place calls using Wi-Fi when they are not connected to their carrier network or out of range of it without incurring additional charges for typical data usage associated with VoIP calling apps like Skype or FaceTime .
