Chestnut and Kurzius came up with the idea after making a website for one of their clients who wanted an email newsletter program for her business. They found that there were some good products available at the time but they either didn't offer the level of sophistication that they wanted or they were too expensive for their client's budget. So they decided to develop a program that would offer a better spution for their client and other small businesses that didn't need all the features of larger email marketing services. They developed a prototype of MailChimp by borrowing some server capacity from friends at their web development firm, and then they spd the idea to investors and raised US$100,000 in initial funding. The company launched publicly in February 2001.By March 2017, MailChimp had raised $US200 million in funding from venture capitalists and was valued at US$1 billion.
