Chapter 21

How to Choose a Topic for Your Research Paper

Abstract

The first step to writing a research paper is choosing a topic that you are interested in. Your topic should be specific, but broad enough that you will have sufficient information to complete the research paper. If you are having trouble choosing a topic, ask yourself what you enjoy reading about. Topics can be found in books, newspapers, magazines, hobbies, and the news. Once you have your topic, start doing some background research on your topic. Once you have some information, you can start thinking about an outline, which will help you organize your thoughts.

Keywords

research paper; topic; outline; background research; thesis statement

Introduction

Now that you know how to construct an article, it is time to put into practice what you have learned by writing a research paper. There are several different types of research papers that you may be asked to write during your cplege career. A popular type of research paper is called an annotated bibliography. An annotated bibliography has two parts. the bibliography and the annotations. The annotations are usually written as a separate article using MLA or APA format. Another type of research paper is called a literature review. A literature review is like the annotated bibliography, but there is usually no separate article written. Instead, the annotations and bibliography appear together in the text of the paper. Other types of research papers include cause and effect papers and synthesis papers. You will learn about these different types of research papers later in this chapter.

Choosing a topic for your research paper is probably the most difficult step in writing your research paper. It is hard to decide what to write about when there seems to be so much information available in books, newspapers, magazines, and other places. This chapter will help you decide what topic to choose and how to find information on it through library resources and other sources such as the Internet and people in your field.

Choosing a Topic

Choosing a topic for your research paper can be both easy and hard at the same time. It is easy because there are so many things that you could write about, such as what you did last weekend, where you would like to travel to someday, or why dogs are better than cats (or vice versa. However, it can also be hard because there are so many things that you could write about that it is hard to decide what you really want to focus on. Before you even think about starting your research paper, you need to know what your topic is going to be. Once you have a topic selected for your research paper, you will need to do some background research on it before you start outlining your paper.

Choose a Topic That Interests You

It is important to choose a topic that interests you. If you don’t like your topic then it will be hard for you to work on your research paper. You should choose something that has meaning for you. For example, if there is a cause that you feel strongly about then you should use that as your topic. It should not just be something that everyone else thinks is interesting or cop. If it does not matter to you then it will not matter to anyone else either. On the other hand, if there is a cause that means a lot to you but does not matter to anyone else then it may be better not to use it as a topic because no one else will care about it. In order for your message to get across to others they have to care about it the way that you do. Choosing a topic that has meaning for you will also help with motivation while working on your research paper.

Choose a Specific Topic

It is important to choose a specific topic instead of having too broad of a topic. Your topic should be specific, but broad enough that there is enough information available for you to complete your research paper. For example, if you choose dogs as your topic then “dogs” would be too broad of a topic because dogs come in all shapes and sizes with all kinds of personalities; therefore, there would not be enough information available for you to complete an entire research paper on dogs alone. However, if your topic was “Doberman Pinschers” then “Doberman Pinschers” would be too specific because there are only selective Dobermans in existence; therefore, there would not be enough information available for you to complete an entire research paper on Doberman Pinschers alone. A good topic would be “Doberman Pinscher breeders in Texas” or “Doberman Pinscher breeders in the United States” because there are thousands of Doberman Pinschers in existence so there would be enough information available for you to complete an entire research paper on Doberman Pinscher breeders in Texas or Doberman Pinscher breeders in the United States alone. Make sure that your topic is specific enough that there is enough information available for you to complete your research paper on that topic alone while still being broad enough that it does not become too specific where there will not be enough information available for you to complete an entire research paper on the topic alone.

Do Background Research on Your Topic

Once you have chosen a specific topic for your research paper it is time to start doing some background research on your topic before starting on your outline. You should already have an idea of what your thesis statement will be by now based on doing the brainstorming activity in Chapter 9. Now it is time to gather information on your topic by looking through library resources and other sources such as the Internet and people in your field who have expertise on the subject of your topic. You should start getting more familiar with the terms used within your field by searching through books and magazines in the library or online databases on topics related to your topic. This will help familiarize yourself with what other authors have written about the subject of your topic so that when it comes time for writing your own paper later on, it will seem more natural for you to write using these same terms instead of using words from another language or jargon from another field.

Look Through Library Resources

Your first resource for finding information will probably be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of journal articles from thousands of journals from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable. In addition, libraries usually have stacks of periodicals such as magazines and newspapers containing lots of articles about just about every subject imaginable as well as books covering just about every subject imaginable as well as encyclopedias covering just about every subject imaginable as well as reference books covering just about every subject imaginable as well as dictionaries covering just about every subject imaginable as well as atlases covering just about every subject imaginable as well as maps covering just about every subject imaginable as well as multimedia resources covering just about every subject imaginable as well as CD-ROMS covering just about every subject imaginable as well as video resources covering just about every subject imaginable as well as audio resources covering just about every subject imaginable as well as databases containing millions of journal articles from thousands of journals from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable as well as online databases containing millions of journal articles from thousands of journals from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable as well as microform cplections covering just about every subject imaginable as well as microform readers containing millions of journal articles from thousands of journals from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your second resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of newspaper articles from thousands of newspapers from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your third resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of magazine articles from thousands of magazines from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your fourth resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of newspaper articles from thousands of newspapers from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your sixth resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of newspaper articles from thousands of newspapers from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your seventh resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of magazine articles from thousands of magazines from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your eighth resource may also be the library because many libraries have online databases that contain millions of newspaper articles from thousands of newspapers from around the world covering just about every subject imaginable! Your ninth resource may
