Instagram is a mobile social networking app that allows users to take pictures or video clips, apply digital filters to them, and share them on a variety of social networking services, including Facebook and Twitter. Users can fplow other users’ feeds by swiping the screen, which displays images in a summarized form. (Kanellos, 2013)
There are several ways to add photos and videos to your Instagram account. You can upload photos from your computer or mobile device, add photos you have taken on Instagram, add images from your camera rpl, add a video clip from your library, or add a video shot in the Instagram app. Videos can be up to 15 seconds long and will be cropped automatically. (Madrigal, 2013)
In recent months, Facebook has made moves to take on the popularity of Snapchat and the rising popularity of Instagram. On April 9th, Facebook launched ‘Facebook Poke’, a direct competitor to Snapchat. Facebook Poke is an app that allows users to send messages that disappear after being viewed for 10 seconds. The creators of Snapchat saw this as a threat and responded with their own update, adding the ability for Snapchat users to send stickers and drawings. In addition, they also added the ability to send messages with text. (Fagan, 2013)
On May 16th, Facebook announced another attempt at the Snapchat market by introducing ‘Slingshot’. This app is similar to Snapchat in that it allows users to send messages to each other that will disappear forever after being viewed. Unlike Snapchat, however, Slingshot allows users to respond to incoming messages with their own photos and videos. It also allows users to respond with pre-made stickers and drawings. (Fagan, 2013)
The above mentioned apps have created a significant amount of success for Facebook. Many people feel that their privacy is not being protected by Facebook and its use of messages. In addition, they feel that these new apps are simply too similar to the ones already available and thus do not want to download them. In response to this concern, Facebook has launched a new feature that will allow users to communicate entirely through private messages rather than through the public News Feeds of their friends. This feature is called “IMAP by Connect”. While it is still in testing stages, there are many who feel that this will be a successful way for users to communicate without worrying about privacy issues or a competition from Facebook itself. (Madrigal, 2013)
IMAP by Connect is a new feature offered by Facebook that allows users to communicate with one another via private messages instead of through a public News Feed on Facebook. It features several different ways in which users can communicate with one another. through messages; group messaging; voice calls; sending files; and drawing. (Madrigal, 2013)
The first two features are essentially what the typical messaging service offers, so they have not changed much since the initial introduction of the service. Group messaging allows multiple people to communicate quickly and efficiently all within one thread. This was originally done through chatrooms on Facebook but now this feature has been adapted for use with private messaging threads. Voice calls are also an option that allows users to talk over FaceTime or Skype while simultaneously messaging one another through Facebook. This feature is very similar to Google Hangouts and available through other social media platforms such as WhatsApp as well. (Madrigal, 2013)
The next two features are where IMAP by Connect really began to shine. Sending files is exactly what it says. users can share files via Facebook Messenger without having to upload them onto their phone or computer first. This means that if a user has an image or video on his/her phone that he/she would like to share with someone else, he/she can simply send it via Messenger without having to go through the steps of uploading it onto a computer first. The drawing feature is even more impressive; instead of just sharing photos via Facebook Messenger, users can simply sketch something out right within the app itself using their finger or stylus if they have one. These drawings are then sent to others via Messages and are sharable just like photos or videos would be. (Madrigal, 2013)
The benefits of integration of IMAP by Connect and Instagram are numerous for both sides of the equation. For instance, many people utilize Instagram as a way to show off pictures and videos that they have taken on their smartphone or tablet devices. This app allows those same people to easily share those pictures and videos with their friends and family members easily via Facebook Messenger without having to upload them onto their computer first. (Madrigal, 2013)
Another benefit for those who use Instagram is the ability to easily share pictures taken on their smartphones and tablets with their friends and family members who don’t use Instagram on their own devices due to the lack of availability on other platforms such as iOS or Android. With integration of IMAP by Connect and Instagram users can still communicate with those who do not use Instagram directly by sending them pictures directly from the app itself without having to go through the hassle of uploading them onto a computer first. (Madrigal, 2013)
Additionally, those who use Instagram may also find it beneficial due to the fact that they can now easily communicate with users who use Facebook Messenger but do not use Instagram on either their mobile device or computer due to its limited availability on other platforms such as iOS or Android as aforementioned. Just as before with non-Instagram users who do not use Facebook Messenger, these people can now exchange pictures with those who use both services simply by sending them pictures from within the app itself rather than uploading them onto a computer first. (Madrigal, 2013)
Atrium Health is one example of how integration between IMAP by Connect and Instagram could work within an organization. Many doctors at Atrium Health take pictures using their smartphones or tablets during examinations or operations so they can share them with patients or family members later on. With integration between IMAP by Connect and Instagram they could easily share these pictures with patients or family members without having to upload them onto a computer first as was previously required of them before the integration was introduced. (Madrigal, 2013)
