First of all, I would like to introduce the Harvest program. Harvest is a virtual community website that aims to build a bridge between China and the rest of the world by providing the user with a platform which users can share their original content and opinions. In addition, Harvest’s mission is to connect people by “providing a free, safe, secure platform to create a virtual community space for people around the world to share and exchange ideas.” (Harvest, 2012. As of December 2012, it has accumulated over 60 million members from more than 200 countries.
Secondly, I would like to introduce Sina Weibo. Sina Weibo is a Chinese microblogging service which enables its users to send short messages up to 140 characters long. In addition, the service allows users to interact with other users through comments, as well as through virtual gifts. Sina Weibo was created in order to compete with Twitter and Facebook. Nevertheless, most of its users are actually Chinese.
Harvest’s Unique Mission
The unique mission of Harvest is that it aims to bridge the gap between China and the rest of the world by providing a platform which the user can share their original content and opinions. It is known that there are many differences between China and other countries such as the United States or Canada. For example, education, culture, ppitics, etc.. Thus, the purpose of Harvest is to encourage the user to exchange their ideas and opinions about these differences on a regular basis. In addition, since most of these users are located in different parts of the world, they have access to different resources which they can use in order to discuss certain topics and issues. For example, let’s take a look at one of Harvest’s recent topics which is “Censorship in China”. In this topic, the user can freely comment on what he/she thinks about censorship in China and how it affects him/her. Furthermore, if another user has a different opinion regarding this issue, then there would be an opportunity for them to comment on each other’s post and try to come to some sort of agreement. As a result, it can serve as a platform for sharing individual opinions and finding out what others have to say in response.
Next, we would like to take a look at Sina Weibo. Sina Weibo is an online social networking service in China that enables its users to send short messages up to 140 characters long. This service allows its users to interact with other users through comments; as well as through virtual gifts. In addition, it provides an interface for every user to publish and read other users’ blogs and microblogs. All of these features are provided for free; however, there are also some premium services which are available for an additional fee. These services include mobile messaging applications which enable its users to post photos and videos on their accounts via cell phones.
Comparison of Sina Weibo and Harvest
Harvest is more similar to Twitter than Sina Weibo when we compare both social networking sites in terms of design, function and approach towards communication in general. For example, both networks allow their users to post messages with minimum characters (140 characters for Sina Weibo; 280 characters for Harvest. However, unlike Twitter; Harvest does not have “hashtag” feature since the creator of this platform believes that the hashtag is not suitable for all types of communications (i.e., ppitical discussions. Another difference between both platforms is that Harvest has more structure than Twitter since it also contains forums where people can discuss certain topics and issues. Therefore, people may find this site more suitable for ppitical discussions rather than casual conversations. This is due to the fact that ppitical discussions require more depth compared to casual conversations; as well as a specific set of rules which everyone should fplow before participating in this discussion. Unfortunately, Twitter does not have such guidelines since its main purpose is purely for casual conversations; thus people do not need to fplow any specific rules before communicating. In addition, unlike Twitter which has created “hashtags” as its own way of organizing threads on particular topics; Harvest has been using “tags” as part of its communication system since it first launched this platform back in 2006. Furthermore, both social media outlets are focused on serving their local market rather than trying to attract international audiences; however in terms of numbers we can see that Sina Weibo has more users than Harvest (over 60 million compared to 5 million users. (Wang & Heikkinen-Allen, 2013.
