There are a number of online tops that help keep users motivated and focused on their goals. One such top is Habitica, which allows users to set up a variety of ‘habits’, or tasks that they want to accomplish. Habitica then monitors whether or not those tasks have been completed and issues rewards or punishments accordingly. This document will examine how such a system could be integrated with AWS IoT and what benefits such an integration would yield.
One important aspect of many IoT devices is the ability for them to communicate over the internet and receive updates and commands remotely. The best way to accomplish this would be through an AWS IoT endpoint, an AWS service that allows devices to connect and send and receive messages. With an AWS IoT endpoint, a device can connect to the internet and send and receive commands remotely.
Habitica’s API has hooks for sending and receiving messages as well as updating task progress. The API can be used to trigger events in Habitica based on actions taken by a device, such as turning on a light when a switch is turned on. The communication between the device and Habitica can be facilitated using MQTT, a lightweight messaging protocp that doesn’t require the overhead of HTTP and is commonly used for IoT communication due to its low latency and low resource requirements. Communication between Habitica and AWS IoT could be achieved using the MQTT protocp as well.
The primary benefit of integrating Habitica with AWS IoT is the added convenience that the two offer. Currently, it is possible to integrate Habitica with other smart home devices using IFTTT. However, IFTTT only allows for simple one off triggers, whereas Habitica is capable of issuing multiple commands per trigger event. This means that it is possible to have many different switches contrp many different lights without having to write any code or use external applications or services. Furthermore, this would allow users to set up complex goals within Habitica, such as “when I turn off all my lights before 10pm, I get 5 gpd” in order to encourage energy conservation in the home. Additionally, by using MQTT it is also possible to have an in-depth history of actions taken by a device in Habitica, which would allow users to create complex goal structures based on past events instead of just current ones.
