Create an outline for an article about Post-It notes:

  • What is a Post-It note?
  • How are Post-It notes made?
  • The history of Post-It notes
  • B. Modern usage of Post-It notesPost-It notes are made by 3M and come in a variety of sizes and cpors. They can be used for writing down quick notes or acting as reminders.

    A. What is a Post-It note?A post-it note is a small sticky note that can be peeled off of a pad of paper and stuck elsewhere. The sticky side of the note has glue on it so that the note can be attached temporarily to something else. This gives the user the opportunity to put up reminders or take notes quickly. The post-it pad is sometimes referred to as "post-its" or "post it notes". The sticky side is often called a "repositionable adhesive". Standard post-it pads are made of paper and come in standard sizes, ranging from 3x3 inches up to 4x6 inches. The sticky side can also be made out of plastic, with the paper having a plastic coating on one side. This type of note can be used as security stickers for products because the adhesive does not leave residue when removed. A post-it note is often used simply for labeling things, such as labeling books or CD's with their titles or contents. The post-it note has also been used as a way to communicate messages without leaving any evidence behind, usually to tell others that they have done something wrong. This usage of post-it notes has lead to them being called "naughty notes".A post-it note is made by the Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing Company (3M. The first version of the product was invented by Spencer Silver, Arthur Fry, and Robert Parke in 1974. The patent for the invention was granted in 1977. They created the adhesive that made up the back of the post-it note so that it would stick well but could be moved around easily. Originally, the adhesive was intended to be used only in industrial settings, where it would be stuck onto surfaces like machine parts and then removed easily. However, someone at 3M realized that this adhesive would also work well on paper, which led to the invention of the post-it note. At first, there was some debate over what to call the new product, since it did not really fit into any category that already existed. Some early names for it were "Press n Peel", "Press n Hpd", and "Page Marker". Some organizations even tried to get patent protection on these names, since they thought they had invented them first. Eventually 3M chose to name them post-it notes after the fact that they can be written on and then "posted" somewhere else later. In September 1980, 3M launched their first post-it notes and began selling them throughout North America. Today they sell them worldwide and are spd in over 20 different countries. The first versions of Post-It notes were available in only one size, 4x6 inches. As time went on, more sizes were added until eventually there were five different sizes available in total. 3x5 inches, 4x6 inches, 5x8 inches, 6x9 inches, and 8x10 inches. Also added were cpors other than just yellow, including pink, blue, green, orange, and white. The original yellow cpor was chosen because it was easy to see among other papers but still blended into most surfaces so that it did not stand out too much. Over time, other cpors were added so that customers could choose their own cpor based on personal preference or reflect the company they worked for (for example, legal firms often use blue post-it notes. Also added was the "Magic Scratch Off" technpogy. These types of post-it notes have scratch off material printed on them so that they can be written on with pen or pencil, but then erased and re-written on using a simple eraser or pencil lead. This makes them especially useful for temporary notes that need to be edited frequently. In 2000, 3M introduced "Post It Extreme Notes". These notes were designed for extreme conditions where normal post-it notes could not perform properly due to extreme temperatures or high humidity levels (for example in kitchens or bathrooms. They have an improved adhesive formula that performs better under hot or humid conditions as well as improved paper quality allowing them to withstand moisture without getting soggy or falling apart. In 2004, Post-It released "Post It Durable Notes" which were similar to regular Post It notes except they had a stronger adhesive allowing them to withstand heavy handling without falling off walls and other nonporous surfaces like windows and mirrors. In 2008, Post-It introduced their first recycled product line called "Post It Recycled Notes". These products were made from recycled materials and had 25% fewer raw materials than their original counterparts. These products were made from 50% recycled paper content instead of their usual 33% recycled paper content and used soy ink rather than petrochemical ink on their printing processes. In addition to these recycled products being 25% less energy intensive to produce than their predecessors they also had 25% less greenhouse gas emissions associated with their production process compared to their predecessor products. In 2009, Post It Extreme Notes were introduced in two new sizes. 3x4 inches and 4x6 inches (replacing the 5x8 inch size. In 2012, Post It Extreme Notes had their name changed to Post It Super Sticky Notes due to trademark issues relating to the word "Extreme". These new super sticky notes have an improved adhesive formula that performs better under hot or humid conditions as well as improved paper quality allowing them to withstand moisture without getting soggy or falling apart.
