They set out to create their own network of computers that could send messages quickly and economically. The DoD called this network ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network. The ARPANET used packet switching technpogy, which allowed computers to communicate via a series of packets rather than sending large messages. With packet switching technpogy, a message is broken into bits of information that are sent to their destination throughout the network. This allows for multiple users to access the network at the same time without slowing down the system.

Sending messages over the ARPANET was an early success. However, the DoD was not satisfied with this alone. They wanted to expand its capabilities beyond just sending messages. They wanted to use the ARPANET as a means of communication between people. To do this, they had to find a way for people to access the system remotely and use it from personal computers. To do this, they needed remote login software that would enable computer terminals outside of ARPANET sites to access the system through remote terminal devices at each site. This software was developed by three men named Steve Crocker, Charley Kline, and Ray Tomlinson.
