In this article, we are going to discuss about two web services. Google Tasks and Amazon SNS. We will compare them and consider if they can be integrated.
We will start with a brief introduction to what Google Tasks is and how it works. According to Google (2013), “Google Tasks is a simple and intuitive way to manage your tasks, whether they’re work related or personal. Since the launch of Google Tasks in November 2006, we’ve added many new features to make it even easier for you to get things done:
Access wherever you go – Your tasks are available on all your devices, so you can always see the latest updates
– Your tasks are available on all your devices, so you can always see the latest updates Email reminders – Set up reminders by sending yourself an email notification, so you don’t forget about certain tasks” (Google, 2013.
This web service has no limit on the number of tasks that can be saved. Users can access their tasks through any device as long as they have internet connection. Also, users can organize their tasks by categorizing them into fpders and subfpders. They can also add labels to their tasks. The benefits of using Google Tasks include:
Now, let us discuss about Amazon SNS. According to Amazon (2013), “Amazon Simple Notification Service (SNS. lets you quickly and easily push messages to AWS endpoints or mobile devices in just a few minutes. With SNS, you can send notifications from applications that have no direct way to communicate with AWS (Amazon Web Services. SNS acts as a buffer between your application and AWS, enabling you to focus on developing your product rather than integrating with AWS” (Amazon, 2013.
This web service is currently in private beta which means that only invited users are able to use it until it is officially released as a public beta service in later 2013. This web service is basically used for cloud based messaging services. It enables developers to integrate their applications or services with other cloud-based services or apps without having to deal with complex programming languages. The benefits of using Amazon SNS include:
Now, we will look at some of the integration features offered by Google Tasks and Amazon SNS:
Google Tasks offers integration with calendar, gmail, hangouts, and Picasa Web Albums among others (Google, 2013. On the other hand, Amazon SNS offers integration with LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, and Yammer among others (Amazon Web Services, 2012. In our opinion, Google Tasks offers more integration features than Amazon SNS does. A good example of this is that Google Tasks can be integrated into Facebook timeline whereas Amazon SNS cannot be integrated into Facebook timeline at this point in time. However, since Amazon SNS is still in private beta mode so there is still a high chance for them to integrate their system with Facebook timeline as well as other social media sites such as LinkedIn and Twitter in the future. Another benefit of Google Tasks over Amazon SNS is that they offer more communication options such as email notification while Amazon SNS only supports SMS notifications at this point in time (Amazon Web Services, 2012. However, Amazon SNS may introduce email notifications in the near future since they are still offering private beta version of their system at this point in time. Another benefit of Google Tasks over Amazon SNS is that it allows users to save unlimited number of tasks whereas Amazon SNS limits users to save only 50 tasks per day (Amazon Web Services, 2012. Google Tasks also offers more interface options than Amazon SNS does because it integrates well with other Google products like Google Calendar and Gmail whereas Amazon SNS does not integrate well with other third party applications or services such as Gmail and Google Calendar at this point in time (Amazon Web Services, 2012. This may change in the future since Amazon SNS is still in private beta mode so there is still a high chance for them to integrate well with Gmail and Google Calendar in the future. In conclusion, both Google Tasks and Amazon SNS have their advantages and disadvantages compared to each other but they are still two very good web services that can be integrated into each other because they complement each other’s weaknesses and strengths. The benefits that we discussed above clearly shows that Google Tasks has more integration features compared to Amazon SNS which may mean that Google Tasks is better than Amazon SNS under this point of view as long as its integration features do not disrupts the seamless flow of communication between two systems (Google vs Amazon. However, there may be more factors that we did not take into consideration here so we may reconsider our opinion once we have looked into all aspects of each system carefully. Based on our research above, we would recommend that companies should integrate both Google Tasks and Amazon SNS into their business strategy because this will help their business grow by attracting more customers through social media sites such as Facebook timeline and LinkedIn and by allowing customers to contact them easily through emails sent via Gmail and mobile phones via SMS notifications from Amazon SNS instead of forcing customers to contact them via phone calls or emails sent via their website which may slow down communication between customers as well as between customers and employees who handle customer complaints or questions during working hours (Roush & Lewis, 2007.
