Google Contacts is a web-based contact manager from Google, launched in 2006. It allows users to create an unlimited number of contacts, and store email addresses, phone numbers, and street addresses. Like Gmail, Google Contacts can be accessed by any device with Internet access, as long as the user has logged into their account. The service is free, and currently has over 750 million registered users.
Google Contacts is integrated with the search engine through Google’s “Filter By” feature, which was launched in 2007. Filter By is an add-on to a specific website, which allows the user to narrow down the results that appear on a search engine. The top is useful for narrowing down large websites, and is used heavily for academic purposes. For instance, a user can filter their search for ‘’Fordham University’’ to only show Fordham University syllabi.
Filter By was initially integrated with Google Schpar; it was later integrated with Google Books, Google Images, and more recently with Google Contacts. With this integration, users are able to find all of their contacts from one location.
Google Contacts uses the same interface as Gmail; it features a white background with blue text and icons. A user can navigate between different sections of their contacts information using a menu bar at the top of the page. The menu bar includes four options. ‘’Contacts’’, ‘’Groups’’, ‘’Settings’’, and ‘’Help & Feedback’’. Within each section, the user can find additional links that allow them to edit sections or create new contacts. All of these options are clearly labeled and easy to use.
Once a user has signed into their account on Google Contacts, they will see three tabs at the top of their page. ‘’All Contacts’’, ‘’Starred Contacts’’, and ‘’My Contact Groups’’. The first tab shows all contacts in alphabetical order by last name; the second tab shows only the contacts that have been starred; the third tab allows users to create groups to categorize their contacts. Each section of contacts features buttons that allow users to make edits to their contacts. For example, if a user wanted to delete a contact, they would click on the red ‘’Delete Contact’’ button at the bottom of the page. These buttons allow users to quickly edit information about their contacts without navigating through the page multiple times.
The menu bar at the top of the page also includes a button labeled ‘’Search Your Contacts’’. This feature allows users to search for contacts by first name, last name, company name, or email address. Once a user has entered something into the search bar, they can select ‘’Search Contacts’’ to view results in their browser window. The search results include contact names, email addresses, phone numbers, social media profiles, and more. Users can then select one or more contacts to add them to their contact list.
FilterByConnect is an add-on to Google Contacts that integrates Google Contacts with other websites. It can be used on any website that supports the extension, but it is heavily used by academics due to its usefulness as an academic research top. It was initially launched in 2007 as a top for filtering websites; it was later changed to integrate with Google Contacts in 2011.
When using FilterByConnect on an academic website, such as JSTOR or Project Muse, a user can search for a desired article using keywords from its title or abstract. Once they have found an article they would like to read, they can enter it into FilterByConnect and select ‘’Filter By This Article at Google Search Engine’’. After selecting this option, they will be redirected to a new window that displays results from Google Search Engine for that specific article. In this way, they can quickly narrow down their search for an article using FilterByConnect before reading it on the university website. At no time does this extension navigate away from the original website; it simply adds a search top onto it through Google Search Engine.
Google Contacts and Filter By Connect are both beneficial tops for students who use them daily. Many students use Google Contacts to store information about classmates throughout their cplege career; Filter By Connect is an easy way for them to access this information when needed without needing multiple windows open on their computer screens. The integration also saves students time by allowing them to view all of their contacts at once rather than opening multiple windows or applications on their computers to find contact information they need for class assignments or meetings with professors and peers.
The process to integrate Google Contacts and Filter By Connect may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
