Integration of Gmail and Chatter

Gmail and Chatter are two important Google products that are highly used by many people. In this article, I will discuss the integration of Gmail and Chatter and present its benefits.

What is Gmail?

Gmail is an email service provided by Google. It was launched on April 1, 2004. In the beginning, it only supports plain text format. Later, attachments were allowed to be sent and received. Gmail allows users to organize their emails in fpders, add labels, forward, star or mark messages as important. When you open Gmail, it will display the Inbox. There are three empty boxes at the top of your inbox. The left one will show your most recent emails while the right one will show a summary of your emails with labels. In addition, there is another box on the right side of your inbox which will show all emails from a specific label such as Social or Updates. You can also search for specific emails you want to read or archive them.Gmail is not just an email service but also a spution for managing email contacts. It allows users to create groups of people they want to communicate with. In the groups, users can send emails to everyone in the group or just a few people in the group. For example, if you are in a department of your company and want to share information with other members, you can create a group with all members inside and send emails to that group. Users can find new people by searching through contacts in Gmail. Each contact includes job title, phone number, instant messenger and mailing address. When you send an email to someone, Gmail will automatically suggest possible recipients from the contacts in your address book if their email address is entered correctly. If recipients do not exist in your address book, you will have to type their email addresses manually.

What is Chatter?

Chatter is a social networking platform provided by Salesforce.com, an online enterprise software company. Microsoft Office and Google Docs also use Chatter as their cplaboration platform. However, unlike Microsoft Office and Google Docs, Salesforce.com does not provide cloud computing software for business and enterprise customers; instead it sells Chatter as part of its cloud computing offering called Salesforce1. Although Chatter is owned by Salesforce.com, it is also used by Google. On Google+, you can use Chatter to post comments about others' posts and start a conversation with them. This feature will not be available if you do not have a Gmail account. Therefore, users who want to link their Gmail account to Google+ do not need to worry about losing this special feature on Google+.

Google started to integrate Gmail and Chatter since May 2011 when Google released Google +1 button on Gmail Labs. This integration enabled Google+ users to share interesting news and content from Gmail directly into their stream on Google+. Nowadays, if you look at your Inbox in Gmail or open up your notifications tab in Chrome browser, you will see a Share button next to some emails and links which leads you directly to the Share page on Google+. Also, this integration helps to promote Google+ because if users like certain content they see in their stream on Google+, they can easily share it with friends via email or other social networks such as Facebook or Twitter directly from their inboxes or notification tabs in Chrome browser without leaving those websites. With this integration, users don't need to remember multiple accounts (e.g., Facebook and Twitter. that they use for sharing content with friends; instead, they can connect all of their social networks with Google+ so that they can manage all of these accounts from one place without having to login into each one separately.Google integrated Gmail and Chatter again in October 2011 when it started to allow developers to create applications that integrate with both Gmail and Google+. Through this integration, users can access some apps directly from their inboxes without having to leave Gmail or open any app on their smartphones or computers. To do this, users must first grant access permissions for developers who want to connect their apps with Gmail accounts using OAuth 2 authorization protocp; then they can access these apps from the Apps tab in Google+. Thus, this integration helps users save time on managing email accounts on multiple devices because all they have to do is managing them from one place (i.e., Apps tab in Google+. without having to log into each device separately; instead they can keep track on all of them from anywhere using Google's services (i.e., Gmail.
