Integration of GitLab and Square

In this article I will discuss how Square’s recent acquisition of GitLab provides them with a competitive advantage in the open source community.

A. What is Gitlab?Gitlab is an open-source self-hosted application that allows its users to host their own repositories. By hosting your own repository on a server you can have everything you need to manage your code and projects without having to rely on any 3rd party site like Github. The user interface is intuitive and easy to use, allowing you to work quickly and efficiently.

What is Square?

Square, founded by Jack Dorsey, is a company that specializes in point of sale services. They allow merchants to accept payment through their mobile phones. They also offer various other services like online ordering, inventory management, invoicing, and accounting. Square wants to help small businesses grow by making it easy for them to accept payments.

In late October 2018, Square acquired GitLab for $250 million. This merger will provide Square with access to the open source community which was one of the biggest reasons why they wanted to acquire GitLab. In addition, GitLab’s enterprise sputions business will help them expand their own already existing enterprise software business. This will enable Square to expand beyond small business and into the enterprise level where they can compete with companies such as Microsoft and Oracle. With GitLab under their belt, Square will be able market itself more effectively to the open source community. GitLab has a large community that will be attracted to the idea that they can now use one platform that can manage both all of their code and also handle their accounting needs. The two platforms are also similar in how they are set up. For example, both use a feature called issue tracking which allows users to keep track of the features being worked on and changes being made to the code. GitLab will be able to reach a larger audience because it is self hosted meaning it doesn’t rely on a third party site like Github or BitBucket. It is also much cheaper than these competitors as well. GitLab also offers more advanced features such as continuous integration, automated testing, built in chat, issue tracking and many more tops for developers. These features will give GitLab a competitive advantage over other platforms because it allows developers to spend less time on technical tasks so they can focus on building their applications. Finally, if any users don’t want to host their own GitLab instance they can still use the website version for free.

The merger between GitLab and Square seems like a win-win situation for both companies. The open source community gets more options allowing them to choose the best service that suits their needs while Square gets additional resources which will help them grow their business into the enterprise market and compete with other companies like Microsoft and Oracle.

The process to integrate GitLab and Square may seem complicated and intimidating. This is why Appy Pie Connect has come up with a simple, affordable, and quick spution to help you automate your workflows. Click on the button below to begin.
